oil/grease-based rust-proofing is the only viable solution, IMO, in a salty area. Furthermore, you must do it every year.

General Motors Corp. was once,"The largest auto maker in the world" and pretty much everything they made was pure crap. My in-laws bought a new 2009 Tiguan against my advice, it spent most of it's first 6 months in the VW dealership shop being diagnosed for ATF leaks and electrical failures that never were fixed. They traded it for a 2010 Toyota Avalon LE which has been trouble free to this day. But I will admit, the galvanizing on the V'dub was flawless, nice job GermanyYes not all VW are perfect but my 2010 German made GTi runs great after 60k. No issues with it.
BMW is making cars in south Africa so mexico isn't too bad.
Opinions aside VW has all body panels galvanized and will be the largest auto maker in the world soon.
Sorry here is the 4Runner Frame.

Is that a 5th Gen frame? 2010 and up?
Anything metal will rust! As a LEO we carry Glcoks and HK which are very corrosion resistant. I can show you endless photos of Glocks rusting from neglect, salt from the ocean, and rainy days when offices fail to clean their gun. Find me a BOF truck without rust spots. It’s nearly impossible.
Here is some auto rust information: Sorry it's long but it shows that no auto company is immune from rust.
Dana corp was responsible for the tacoma frame rust issue and has to pay Toyota 25 million dollars. Ford is suing them too since they had rust issues with their F-150 and Windstar.

can someone please POR-15 their frame welds and report back here with absolutely gushing, overwhelmingly positive results so i can do the same next summer and, in the meantime, go back to admiring how great my paint looks this winter (thanks to the fall application of Klasse AIO + Sealant Glaze) instead of obsessively doing 4Runner upskirts every time i walk into my garage?!
thanks in advance.
:lol::jk: (sort of, anyway)
Aren't you supposed to avoid hosing the underbody when you have such treatments applied? Just wondering because that's what I've been told. I haven't ran the 4Runner thru a touchless car wash with under spray mostly because he chemicals they use are way too agressive for the paint. I do go to the self-wash bays but those wands only get so far under because they're long, stiff, and probably do very little. I only use the "rinse" option just to hose the salt off the paint and underneath the rocker panels as best as possible... Again to avoid the harsh soap chemicals.I did exactly this when my 4Runner was brand new almost two years ago. I went over all the frame welds and everywhere else where rust was showing with POR-15 twice. Additionally, my 4Runner gets an annual coating of Krown in the spring time.
My truck regularly gets a carwash in the winter that includes a good spray on its underbody. Surprisingly, I have not noticed any of the POR-15 paint having peeled off either. This may be partly due to Krown forming a thick protective layer overtop?

ha. that's great. knew someone must've done it. did you apply the "prep" product first or just wire brush it and paint directly over with POR-15?I did exactly this when my 4Runner was brand new almost two years ago. Call me anal but here in Calgary, we get a lot of salt sprayed on our roads over the winter months.
To date, I am more than pleased to report that under close and frequent examination, I have not noticed any rust showing through on these previously POR-15'd areas. My truck regularly gets a carwash in the winter that includes a good spray on its underbody. Surprisingly, I have not noticed any of the POR-15 paint having peeled off either. This may be partly due to Krown forming a thick protective layer overtop?
Either way, I am more than pleased with the results. It is damn messy but well worth it!

post up some pics in this thread if you would. a thousand words, as they say...
if it was new, i doubt it mattered much. it's supposed to bond properly to surface rust that's clean (no grease) and not flaking. if purely preventative (rust-free surface) an etching primer is supposed to be used to give it something to bite into. since we're talking about frames here, concerns about a UV-stable topcoat are sorta moot. definitely post up pics.Lol given how anal I am, I am almost too ashamed to admit that I did not use any prep product or wire brushing. The truck was so new that I simply wiped down the areas I was planning to paint with a damp cloth, then dry, and used a sponge brush to paint it on. I did the same thing to my winter beater last time and even with the light hit of a hammer, the POR-15 adhered and did not flake off..so as long as you're not painting directly onto loose flaking rusted metal.
I'll try to take some pictures ASAP.
yeah, there's also Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, Rust Bullet, and Rustoleum Rust Converter (Reformer?), among others. proper surface prep and application seems to be the "magic bullet" common to success with all brands. You can paint Rustame on all areas of rust to convert the rust into a coating that will turn black and then painted if you like. I would then use Fluidfilm once every fall inside and outside the frame to help prevent more rusting.
Welcome to the joy and agony of owning a 4runner. Painting over the rust is like painting over cancer. I have a 2000 SR5 that I tried painting over the rust, and the frame just rusted from the inside out, and only has 120k on it. Oh what a feeling! I was hoping that this was going to be a 20+ year vehicle, instead I had to take it off the road, and now have to drive my 91 Suburban instead; go figure. It looks like Toyota Japan does not produce a superior product anymore, or feels that they have no obligation to their baka gaijin customers. Sorry to say this because I really liked my 4runner, but the best thing you can do is to sell yours since you are facing inevitable catastrophic frame failure.
