Free Window Etching Worth It?

My employer has a company on-site today and tomorrow that is doing free VIN window etching. I've never had windows etched, but it seems pretty cut and dry. Any "negatives" or things to ask if I have this done? Is there any potential of damage to windows with factory tint?

seems like free would be worth it so long as they don't mess up your windows. There shouldn't be any issues with factory tint as it's not a film, it's mixed in with the glass.

They can't very well damage the tint if the windows are etched on the outside.

Personally, I have it done on my cars. Since I'm not a car thief, I'm really not sure of the effectiveness. I would like to believe the reasoning is sound and it is more effective than .... say an alarm.

The etching is pretty visable especially against tinted windows.

I believe you should already have the vin etched on there by the factory.

Check your windows prior.

FYI: In New York State if a theif steals your car and you have VIN etching on your windows it's considered a federal offensive with mandatory jail time and a mandatory fine. Without the VIN etching the theif will only get probation and a minimal fine. So, VIN etching is supposed to be a deterent.

My car which was purchased in NJ came with the windows already etched. I don't even notice it. I was told it is done by acid. If it's free, I'd do it but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it done. Just my 2 cents

I did it on all 11 pieces of glass using one of the kits you can get online. Kit was $20 or $25 (can't remember exactly), so it's not expensive and very easy to do.

If they are willing to etch all the glass for free, then I'd say it's a good deal.

To make it stand out more, you can use a wax-based paint you can get at the local craft store. Very easy to put on, lasts several weeks, then reapply as needed. The paint was about $3.

Check your insurance company...mine gives a discount for etched windows.

I don't see any reason not to have your glass etched.

Dealer wanted $229, I bought a kit online for $20 and had all the glass etched in less than 30 minutes. Hardest part was getting the template straight on the glass before using the etching acid. No biggie though.

In new york city the police will etch your windows for free. You can call your local pigs and see if they will do it for you.
