Friendly reminder- Change you cabin filter (pic)

Yup, bought my 04 with 102k miles and lookie lookie.

I dropped in a new one and sprayed that sucker with some ozium in hopes it would help with the musty smell. (parked in dark garage for 3 months when owner passed away)

I have never changed mine. It was always low priority on the maintenance list and I just never got around to it, but I am going to do it now. Was it pretty straight forward?

Painfully easy. Squeeze the sides of the glove box after you open it to allow it to drop down, slide out the filter tray.
 
lol mine looks exactly like that

banged it out a few times today - on the earlier models you have to take out a screw too.
 
YUCK...sure is filthy....sadly..mosts folks filters are like that....based on looks.. i d'd say a million bacteria call that filter home! :)

OP here---if you look closely, the corner on the right section of the picture actually has a hole.
I am imagining it was so clogged that the suction and general wear and tear created that.
So maybe for the last year 90% of the air was going thru that and not even beng filtered.
WACKTASTIC.
 
if you're cheap like me, cut out a section of a home furnace filter that matches the dimensions of your old one. Install. I figure I can get at least 4 cabin filters from a single furnace filter.

just did this today. i got a 20x20 filter and it can make 4 with some room to spare.

Goodness that is disgusting! Not to be a debbie downer, but did you take a closer look at the hole in the corner to make sure it's not a hole caused by a rodent? I surely hope that the only mess you find lurking inside your vehicle.
 
nope, all else is clear. no critters!

And yeah, I paid $5.97 on ebay free shipping, not worth the effort of making one.
And somewhere on the forum a toyota tech said he has seen a few home-made ones end up failing and damaging the fan. I can't speak from experience but that's what I read here.
 
I'm curious if any of you noticed improvement in AC function?

My AC is pretty weak and despite the fan making a bunch of noise on HIGH doesnt move much air.
 
New filter results!

My filter looked like the one in the OP, disgusting! The air coming of the vents would drop in half when I selected fresh air, now the Air coming out is the same strength as the recirculating setting.

Its going to hit 100+ here for the next few days, this was well worth the $8 and by far the most bang for my buck spent on the 4runner.

Ozium works wonders, mine sat for 2 years, new filter and a can of ozium later, it no longer had the musty smell.
