Hey there I'm making the switch from the land rover dis-crap II gas gussling series to the 4runner (I've always liked) but I know nothing about them. I'm looking at a couple right now and do not know which to get. Which ones have diff locks? School me fill me in (and don't get too pissed off). I'd really appreciate the help.

Which years are you looking at?

The 3rd Gens were made with the differential locker for the longest period of time. The 2009 Trail Edition was the only 4th Gen to have a locker. Starting in 2010 (5th Gen) all Trail Editions started coming with lockers.

@clemsonfan, I like the 3rd gen a lot, always have liked how they look. I may actually buy one this month. There's also a 91 im lookin at but I'm leaning at the 3rd gen. I can't take this disco II anymore. Plus I really want some diff locks in my life ha. Do all the 3rd gens have diff locks?

nice I read up on the history, it helped a lot. Just one more question, were there certain models say 96-00 that did not come with the rear diff lock?

As I understand the 4th Gen T4R, though there is no locker, the effect is achieved by the ATRAC system using the ABS in reverse to cause all wheels to receive the power and subsiquently pull.

All I can tell you is that the thing will NOT slip a wheel in the snow if all the systems are on. Only when you lock the center diff and it then turns off the VSC that the thing is "fun" to drive in the slick.

All in all, very amazing vehicle.

No, not all the 3rd Gens have the locker. They are kind of hard to find actually, but they are out there.

The Disco is wayyyyy nicer than the 3rd gen to drive, it has by far the smoothest ride i have ever driven, driven a good amount of cars as well. You are correct about how thirsty it is. The Disco is pretty reliable too, nothing out of the ordinary, and everything is hold up great at 85k miles. The 4runner is too at 165k miles. Besides the MPG and and changing the spark plug wires there isnt much to hate about a Disco 2, heck it even has an auto and i like that too.

John your crazy! the disco is a horrible ride. it may be smooth, but it has no power and the breaks are like driving an 18 wheeler semi. i owned one for about 3 years and it died a painful death at 68k miles.

hated that car, and since having my jeep, and now my 4runner, and i will never look back. from owning that land rover, i can honestly say i will never own one ever again

The rear diff lock was an optional extra, not standard equipment.

Which one did you have? What motor, and what size brakes, because your talk about the Disco describes my 4runner.

Don't get the 91! The 3.0 is a dog and the 22re is bulletproof but gutless. Go for the 3rd gen, you will be much happier.

i had the disco series II with the LE package. 4.0 liter V8, cant remember the breaks. that thing was like trying to drive an elephant...

You canNOT turn off ATRAC. You can only turn off VSC via locking center diff.
