From sliders to OEM running boards

Ok, so I have buyer's remorse.

I have the Shrockworks sliders (angled up with extra tube) installed on my 2011 Limited. The OEM running boards on the Limited were practically useless with how far out the L's side skirts stuck out. The actual usable foot print was so small that even my 7yr old daughter struggled to use them. I also wasn't a fan of the chrome/aluminum.

But I regret getting the style of slider that I did. I really wanted a flatter style, but went with what I could afford at the time. I have no intentions (at this time) to do any heavy off-roading. Minor fire roads and whatnot for remote camping at best. So I'm considering the all black OEM running boards instead.

I'm also using Shrockworks TE side skirt panels, so that might be an issue as to how the all black boards mount, I don't know.

Am I insane? I understand the pro's-con's of each, and it's really boiling down to aesthetics. I just wanna hear from group their thoughts.

You may find somebody to trade with you and I wish you were a bit closer! Another option is to take the sliders off and cut the angle bars where they attach. Then re-weld them flat. This should give you more toe room. You could also add a 1" chunk of pipe to push the bars out a bit further.

Some good ideas there.

I wouldn't trade out-right though (for OEM running boards). I may just buy a used set and give them a go. See what life with them is like.

You might be able to find someone to trade you your angled for their flats, it may take some time though.

I'd give you my running boards for free if you were local. I want them gone, but can't bring myself to trash them.

I have the Shrockworks flat sliders, and they work great as a step. I got them flat because my son is going to be needing the step in the near future. But I prefer the version you have. Would have been interested in a swap if the timing was different.

Yeah, couldn't justify shipping the stock running boards.
I've been looking a bit more and I'm wondering how the newer 5th gen boards would mount, if they even can. I might have to get actual TE running boards if I choose to pursue this.

And who knows, maybe one day we will swap sliders :thumb3:

I got shrockworks on my limited. Removed the lower valance and installed the shrockworks trim piece. I would leave it alone and not convert back.

Hi there - I'm also in PA and have the NFab Epyx and the all black OEM running boards from my 2019 TRD ORP. Let me know if you're interested in figuring out a trade for either. I just put the Epyx on a few weeks ago but not really loving the look. Was thinking of switching back to the OEM running boards, but I'd really like to go with a slider.

I really like my angled Shrockworks sliders. Because of my height I don’t use them. My 4Runner is lifted with 285’s and my 5’2” wife with heels and my 6 year old son ingress/egress just fine. I wanted the least noticeable slider. I don’t like the look of sliders in general, especially flat straight steps. Just my opinion. Keep them and put the trim on.

Not crazy since not sure why you want to driver around with a couple of hundred extra pounds if you dont use them.

I just removed my running boards since want sliders but postponing installing until I plan to use them. Not sure if the wife is happy about this since she is short so likes running boards.:bounce:

They're not the heaviest things, but yeah, they're a few pounds. My mind is mostly set on the looks of the thing (though a flatter step/slider would be more functional). I'm not unhappy, generally, with the sliders, and I rarely step on them myself unless it's to use the roof basket. I just should've held out and ordered what I really wanted (like a set of RCI's (or similar) with the kick-out)

That's why I decided to build the kickout version sliders. I know Shrockworks is making them now, and theirs look great. I love how much more step I have now compared to the stock limited junk, and it's way easier on the kids getting in and out as well.
