Front and Rear Diff fluid change

He's not talking about gear oil, he's talking about transfer case fluid which is straight 75W oil. As far as the 75-90 in the diffs, you're absolutely right. Mobil 1 full synthetic 75-90 for me.

Gear oil or xfer case fluid - it doesn't matter. The part # mentioned is no longer available according to Olathe Toyota. Every other dealers parts system will show the same. The only way you're going to get this product is to find a dealer with some that's left on a shelf. I wouldn't waste my time sourcing a dead horse.

My dealer quoted me $50/per diff and T/C back then as well. I asked how they could charge so little when the fluid was $80 list and they said, "oh, we get it in bulk". Pressed further and you get the BS gear start to engage.
It's still available on Toyota.com. The wise dealers have stopped shipping it is my guess. If you're old enough to remember cans of oil then you probably remember how they liked to leak.
The Toyota parts website is pretty cool, you can look for dealers by zipcode that offer online ordering and compare prices.

Factory specified Transfer Case Oil LF (Part No.08885-81080), $75 per liter can. Consistency a lot different from M1 75W-95 gear oil.

How dod you guys get the canned stuff in the TC? I have an old "punch & pour" spout for canned oil, but is there room underneath the vehicle to turn the can and pour the oil into the TC?

You'll want a pump any way you go. I don't think there's enough room to tilt even the bottle with the little spout lids.

These screw right into the screw lid bottles like the Mobil 1 75w-90 but you could just puncture a hole in the can and stick the straw down through, holding it down while you pump.

For me, the pump tends to leave quite a bit in the tubing and the bottom of the bottle. Since we need every drop of the 1 liter can, I think I’m going to look into transferring into a squeeze bag or bottle. Worst case scenario, I’ve got a 1/2 dozen squeeze bottles that I normally use for epoxy resin.

I pour the can into the empty Moibil1 diff oil plastic bottle, and using its pointed spout, I attached a hose. Raise the both as high as I can beside the properller shaft and just squeeze the plastic bottle. ��

Just did the front and rear differentials at 15K with Amsoil Severe Gear. The squeeze bottles made it a breeze. If I did it over again I would only do the rear at 15K, front at 30K.

Our 2011 SR5 has almost 97K miles. We bought it brand new and I have never changed the diff nor the transfer case oils. I bought the oil earlier this week and will replace them probably next week. The front and transfer case I am not too concerned about. I do want to see the rear though after 97K miles.

I plan on replacing these every 60K. I will try to take pictures of the rear diff oil especially since it was never replaced.

Oh, I got the Redline 75W-85 ($12.7/bottle) since it's the same weight/spec to the stock oil and will put the Toyota Transfer case oil ($58/can). I only bought one can of the transfer case oil though. If 1 can is not enough since it says 1.1 L, I will just top it off with the Redline oil. If it's clean/goldish when I replace it, then I will do my next replacement after another 100K - 120K miles.

They said they use 75/85 gl5 with a lsd additive in it and it costs $55 per quart. They said it will run around $230. I asked why does it cost so much per quart when I can get a premium brand like redline or amsoil for much cheaper. He claimed it was because of this additive they put in, that it makes it very high quality and hence more expensive. Needless to say I politely declined the service....

Yep - the vast majority of dealers(not just Toyota) will source lubricants from local wholesale providers. A few years ago I called all of the Toyota dealers in my area and asked about Toyota's boutique over-priced gear oil. Most of them didn't know it existed and said WTF? The few that did, said no, we simply use regular gear oil - no boutique.

It would not surprise me if a Toyota dealer quoted a customer $55 a qt. as mentioned above and then used commonly available, off-the-shelf gear oil.

Always have to keep in mind it's the fox guarding the henhouse. If the truck breaks, they'll get paid to fix it. The likelihood that an independent body would investigate an issue and determine it was caused by poor dealer maintenance procedures is less than zero.

I plan to change the diff and transfer case fluid soon and wonder if I can substitute all the OEM oil types with mobil 1 75w90 as I saw in another post? Where do you usually buy them from? I saw one on Amazon and wonder if that's the correct type. Below is the link

However, Advance Auto and Auto zone I think its $12.99 a quart, that Amazon price is showing $16.49 for me right now.

Yes, same stuff. They don't make it in a non-LS formula.

Rear axle seal HELP PLEASE!!!

I can't find anything on changing the axle seal on a 5th gen. I have heard oil all over my driver rear brakes. Especially between the disc and the parking break. Do I need to replace just the axle seal or the bearing, bearing seal and axle seal? If it's just the axle seal, do I need it pressed on and off? Ive been searching all over and cant find the answer.
