Figured I'd do a quick write up with pics of my speaker install using stock mounts and plug & play wires. I am by no means and autophile, electronics guru, or techie just a diy-er. All I cared about was a little better sound than the 18yr old factory speakers gave. I think I accomplished that.
First I removed the door panels and speakers with mounts attached. Then pulled speakers from mounts
I had to cut and modify the opening of front speaker mount to fit the speakers I used
I reused the plug & play wiring on mount after cutting from old speaker. I soldered new terminals to attach to new speakers.
Mounted new speakers using existing mount holes which was not perfect alignment but worked. Then put weatherstrip on back.
Finished fronts
The rear speakers are 5.25 and I wired in similar fashion but had to mount by drilling holes offset from mount holes and I used long bolts and nuts to attach speaker.
I learned a few things doing this. I didn't want to go component because I used coaxials on my Tacoma and the sound quality was great. The mistake I made this time was buying 3-way speakers but price was cheap. I can here the tweeters on factory component and aftermarkets. Sounds great but kills the bass and mid a little. I'll either unhook the factory tweeters or just add my sub from Tacoma which I think will make it perfect. Most likely I'll do components in the future I just didn't want to mess with crossovers and mounting plus I was on a budget.
I also think double din headunit upgrade is in the future but now the factory stereo gets the job done.
Overall anything beats those factory paper speakers!
