Front axle hub removal

I have the dust cover off the back and am now having the hardest time knocking out the hub with a hammer, as shown on many videos. What I haven't seen is abs equipped hubs. The hub has moved out about 1/2" from hitting it with a hammer. Is the abs speed ring stopping me from knocking out the hub? if so how can I remove it? I would use my press to remove the hub assembly, but it is nearly impossible to fit this on the press with the hub on.

You have gotten farther than I'd expect with just a hammer. I had a beast of a time getting my hubs out, but I have alot of rust.

Check out the link in my signature for my project thread, I show how I got mine out (link to it from the first post). I used a 3-jaw puller from harbor freight, and after breaking it twice and reinforcing it with custom links from bar steel from home depot, it worked very well for pressing out the hub. All in all the puller, steel, and long shoulder bolts should run you less than $30. I didnt' post another picture of the puller after getting the longer shoulder bolts on it, but I also bought a bunch of washers to stack up to allow the nut to tighten down on the links, while ensuring that the shoulder extends through both links so that I am not shearing threads.

You need to remove the spanner nut first. The gold color ring with 4 holes in it.

If you have been beating on it with a hammer, you've probably f-ed up everything already.
 
You're right, I didn't even notice that ring on there... I didn't have that, my rin was just pressed on. I take it that's a manual hub thing?

As far as I can remember, the ADD hubs don't have a spanner on them.

Hence why you have to tighten the axle nut to 174ftlbs.

HOWEVER, [MENTION=59542]Singtoe[/MENTION] is right. Beating it with a hammer, good chance you've already screwed that up.

Either by getting it cockeyed, or just ruining the hub.

They're supposed to be pressed in and out. Not beat on.

Yeah, I've never been impressed with the youtubes showing how to remove stuff like this without a press. I also hated seeing the guys pounding their axles on the cement to get their backing plates off...

I highly suggest hitting the sale at harbor freight and picking up the 12-ton press. I have used mine quite a bit and it has more than paid for itself.
 
There's so little info on pressing out this type of hub I missed that spanner nut. Unfortunately I may have to go the machine shop route or have this project on hold for a while. Long work week coming up plus going out of town.

Hopefully the nut is a softer material than the hub, and you have just stripped the nut threads a bit. Grab a hub socket from any autozone and try to twist it off, should just take a few minutes. Hopefully you just have to buy a new ring nut.

AutoZone DOES NOT sell the spanner socket for Toyota. You need to either special order it, or get it off Amazon. Part number....

And a Bearing seperator to hold it in the press.

Ok, I have seen these sockets at autozone but I guess I can't verify for sure that they will fit Toyotas, I just assumed they are standard sizes.

12 ton will do it, like I said, I have done it; 4 times. A 3 jaw puller can do it too, again, I did it that way too. Click the link in my sig. The 12 ton press did just fine. You can make a custom jig like I did if you have a welder rather than buy a bearing separator. I pressed the hubs out of 4 knuckles, 2 with the puller, 2 with the press. Both work just fine, especially if he has already been able to break the hub loose.

FME, I went to ALL the auto parts places around here, Advance, AutoZone, NAPA, O'Rielly's, and they didn't have the right socket for a Toyota. Some look VERY similar, but they WILL NOT work.

I guess the guy I used just had a shitty press then. I used a 12 ton and couldn't get the bugger to budge. Jumped to the 20 and it came out like butter.

Yeah, metric vs standard is freaking annoying... I really wish they'd do away with some of these specialized components like that.

Not sure why the presses would be so different, maybe the hydraulic ratio is higher on the 20 ton which made it easier.
 
I went ahead and got the 20ton from HF. Not a bad deal with the 20% off coupon. I've been looking at the spanner sockets all day. The correct socket online ranges from $45-65 shipped. I found another on amazon for $11 but with multiple reviews saying the socket does not fit.

I'm just that good. LMFAO.

Basically, I used trial and error.

I looked at the Torque Specs I had on my Phone at the time, (here, http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/129548-torque-specs.html) and went through the possibilities.

I knew it wasn't the "Axle Shaft Hub nut", because that's for ADD only.

So I typed in "Toyota Inner Lock Nut Tool" and it popped right up.
 
The spanner socket that I purchased worked flawlessly.
But getting the hub pressed out was another story. The 20 Ton press bent any kind of makeshift metal setup I had. A custom welded tool is definitely needed for this project. I decided to go ahead and grab the three jaw puller. I really should have done the modifications suggested but went ahead and tried without. The main drive bolt became cross threaded and the arm brackets ripped right through the bolts.
My roommate finally convinced me to call a shop to get it done at $53 in labor.
