front axle output shaft bearing...

Hey guys/gals-

Was replacing my thermostat yesterday and while I was waiting for the coolant to drain I started chasing down a humming/vibrating sound I've been hearing in the front end. Its really similar to a worn wheel bearing, and I've been putting that higher and higher up on my to do list when I move into my new place and get all my tools back.

anyway. I was poking around and noticed the p/s cv axle had a ton of play and was leaking some gear oil so now i suspect this as the culprit, or at least a more serious issue.

so my question is this... do I need my press for the bearings? I have enough tools on hand where I can probably tackle this but have never done those bearings before so I'm not sure if they are pressed or not. I'll probably just go ahead and do both sides with new cv's and save the old ones for trail spares.

plus I'm running about 2" of lift up front and the cv angle didn't look too bad. I'm going up another .5" - .75" and was going to do the diff drop with that. Think I should just do the diff drop when I replace the bearings and cv's to avoid any complications/ waste my $?

Thanks in advance!

front bearings require a press. Just remove the knuckle and do yourself or bring to a shop. Yes go for the diff drop, real easy to install, cheap and no arguments as to why it might be a bad idea :)

Thanks JC12. Looks like I have a fun project on hand. I can't seem to find anything on the output shaft bearings still. so maybe I'll snag some pics of the process to get something up here when I get around to getting it done.

ya.. i would say 90% of the guys have it done at a shop so there isn't much of an opportunity to get a write up but it would be awesome if you were able to. Here is a little bit of info and some pics. I would look into all the worn parts that you will be removing anyway (upper/lower ball joints, half of the cv axle etc) and get a list of parts you may as well replace while its all in pieces so you have all parts on hand.
