Front Backing Plate Replacement

Hi . I just had my CV Joints and boots on my 2007 4 runner replaced. I live in the rust belt and the mechanic indicated my front backing plates are rusted considerably. I got under the car this morning and looked to confirm they are really rusted. Is the replacement of backing plates necessary is my first question? My second if so does anybody if this is a costly fix? If so would it be best to have them replaced at the time of my next break pad replacement or this a fix that is requires the axel to be dissembled? Any info or insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated

Not required but they are there to shield your brakes from debris so it's a good idea to keep them intact. A good time to change them is when you are doing wheel bearings since the hub assembly must be removed from the steering knuckle to remove the backing plate.

They shield the brake rotors from debris as mentioned above and actually provide a funneling effect for cool air to the rotors.

To replace the backing plates you basically remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly, pop the new plates on and bolt it all on. It's sandwiched between the wheel bearing and spindle, you don't need to replace the wheel bearings to do this as the units are bolt-on.

just deal with it the next time you have to remove the axle or wheel bearing but if it bothers you and if its rusted through, you may do so.
