Front brake pads - how many shims?

I am in the middle of changing my front brake pads and got a new set of OEM pads from dealer, which included 4 flat shims that had a clear plastic paper on one side that I am supposed to remove to expose the adhesive. I recall that the old pads had 2 shims per pad, one solid that contacts with the caliper piston and a slotted one that goes between that and the back of the pad. When I took out the old pad the slotted shim is "baked" into the old pad, no way I can take it off. I did cleaned the outer shim.

My question is, is the new 4 flat shims supposed to replace the old slotted shims and go between the pad and the old flat shim? This looks impossible as the shim tabs of the shims are in the same places so if I use one I cannot attach another. Or did the dealer didn't provide the proper shim kit?

My EBC's came with a similar integrated shim. I contacted them in the UK, where they told me to not install any additional shims, as it will cause problems. The integrated shim with the adhesive is designed to reduce noise (shim-vibration).

Check the link in my signature to find the front caliper replacement thread. I took a pic of the solid & slotted shim kit, with part number, they sold me that replaced a solid shim kit based on a TSB. You should be able to pry the slotted shim loose off the old pad. Use brake grease between the shims and the pad.

I purchased some front OEM pads recently, they didn't come with any shims. Haven't installed them yet and I figured I would just use the old shims.
Wonder if I got jipped.

thanks guys for the info. I will try the pry off the slotted shim from the old pad and reuse it. So kmverter, the slotted/solid shim is replacing the old single solid shim? I wonder why then they gave me the single solid shim when I bought the new pads.

My OEM pads didn't come with any shims either. It looks like you have to order them separately. I recently got my front brake pads replaced and ended up reusing the old shims. Haven't had any problems so far.

On a side note.. when I replaced the front brake pads, I noticed that the pins, pin clips, and anti-rattle springs were rusted. I ended up reusing them for the time being until I get a new set ordered.

Yes, the 2 part shim (solid + slotted) replaced the one solid. Check my thread because I think I referenced the TSB #. Ask the stealership if something else has changed since.
Don't damage/bend the old slotted shim when trying to remove it. Any pics?

Pads and shim kit are sold seperately. You should be able to reuse the shims but I had to replace mine due to damage resulting from a frozen caliper piston.

Thanks Kmvreter. I didn't get a chance to take pics. I will try and take some pics from the driver's side when I replace. I remember when I replaced the right side the slotted shim is tightly attached to the solid shim, so I just cleaned it up, put some brake grease on it and reuse it.

This is the first I have heard of Toyota using adhesive backed Shims... normally we use the slotted and solid shims on most of our factory brake pads.

Can you post a picture of these stick-on shims wit maybe a part number? I'm curious to see them.

Nevermind. The shim kits for the front is 04945-35120 and 04946-30100 for the rear rear.
