Front Brake Rattle after Brake Job? Check this!

Just a little heads up. Did a front brake job a few months ago and the front brakes have been rattling ever since. Yes, I did lube everything up. But I did not buy OEM brake pads. I bought Duralast Gold from my local Autozone. Lifetime warranty even for wear. The pads even came with a new set of caliper pins, clips and the anti-rattle springs.

So I replaced all of it. And the brakes rattled on both sides. I finally got so frustrated I called the dealer to see if they sell just the anti rattle springs. I couldn't help but wonder if they were stronger or something. Turns out they do sell them. It's called a fit kit and it consists of two OEM anti rattle springs for a total cost of $3.50.

Just got back in after replacing them on both front wheels. The OEM versions were a lot wider than what came with the Duralast kit and you really had to compress them to fit in between the pads. But guess what?

NO MORE RATTLE ON EITHER SIDE!

So if you go with aftermarket pads you may just want to get a pair of OEM Anti Rattle Springs. If you already have OEM springs maybe just re-use them instead of using what came with your aftermarket pads. Then you won't have to take a chance on fixing it later.

This happened to me as well.

I had my front calipers replaced and the mechanic put on new pads and rotors...NAPA brand i think. A1 Carbone calipers. The pads werent the same width as the OEMs and there was a rattle. He applied some pink paste thats some kind of glue...i got pissed, took it to the dealership and got all new OEM pads n rotors. Its been cool ever since ( :::knock on wood::: )

Think this can be found on Rock Auto or something? Or just walk into dealer and ask?

Go straight to the dealer. There is a specific part called a "fit kit" for the front (and rear brakes). The front fit kit consists of just the two OEM anti rattle springs. They were very different (much wider) than the anti rattle springs that came with the aftermarket pads I bought. I cannot help but believe that some of the aftermarket brake pad manufacturers try and use the same anti rattle spring for a variety of cars instead of making a specific one for every car. So the OEM version was wider and I had to compress it a whole lot more to fit it between the pads.

My lesson learned is that while the aftermarket pads might be the same shape and work just fine, the anti rattle spring was not. Get the springs from the dealer for $3.50 cents and you will have two anti rattle springs that work like they are supposed to. And yes, it is really called a "fit kit". Those are the words right out of the dealer parts guy's mouth. It took me all of 30 minutes to replace both. Well worth the time.

Back in 2001 when I had a 95 Civic, I had the same issue, bought pads at Schuck's, (now O'Reillys). Went back for another brand and you can see that the first set was actually smaller (in foot print) and thus causing it to shift in the carrier.

The last time I did brakes on my wife's RX350, I used Akebono from tirerack and had no problems.

Man, so glad I found this post, my service shop used the Napa Eclipse Calipers, and I had them install Hawk pads. Eversince the new calipers, I get the most annoying rattle over ever bump. I tried replacing the anti-rattle springs from Napa, but Istill get the rattle. Looks Like I'll try the OEM anti-rattle springs.

I just replaced my front braked (caliper pads and rotors) a month ago with all napa parts. Eclipse calipers , premium rotors, and adaptive one pads. My anti rattle clips that came with the calipers were tough to put in and I haven't had any trouble at all. They are quiet and work great. Interesting though how that little clip is causing so much trouble

I bought the springs at Advance Auto and it stopped the rattling my old worn out brakes had. I also replaced the pins as they were getting grooves in them. I don't know if there is supposed to only be one spring on the bottom pin, or a spring on both, but I bought 2 packages and put a spring on each pin. Had that damn rattling for 8 months!! Ugh, so glad it's gone now!

Mine still rattles but not as badly. I think I need to double up my springs, I just have one on each caliper, at the bottom. Going to get a new set of pins and springs for each side and do them up with grease and such before winter.

I replaced the brake hardware (anti rattle bracket) and even put two on each caliper. But it still rattled.

Finally i removed the pads and found that the calipers were frozen. The drivers side caliper had three frozen pistons out of the four. I replaced the caliper and the rattle is gone.

The rattle was caused from the frozen caliper not holding the brake pads evenly against the rotor while driving.

Check your calipers that may be the solution to your rattle noise.

Agreed, but how the hell did I get air in there?! I haven't cracked a line since I've owned it. Just has me totally confused.

Unsure but check your fluid
And maybe swap it out if you have not done so in recent years
Or your pads or calipers are shot

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but could you walk me through replacing this clip? Kind of a brake noob and haven't found a thread that specifies how to do this. Thanks!
