I wish that Pelfray bumper was available for '10-'13 t4r's looks like the only option that hugs the headlights on 10-13 models with full headlight/grill hoops is the 4x4labs front

metal tech bumper question

Hi, new guy here. Just got a 16 trail premium. So far, I have:
blacked out the windows
nfab nerf bars
weathertech mats

Next week:
1.75/3.5 bilstein 5100 lift
TRD black rims
285 Toyo tires

I am looking at a bumper and the one that appeals the most to me is the Metaltech. My question is, what is the purpose of the holes on each side of the license plate mount?

Welcome to the forum. Looks like those holes are intended for you to reach through to get to a winch. Looks a bit odd without a winch mounted, in my opinion.

Thanks for the welcome.

After I posted, I figured I may as well go to the source, so I e-mailed them. They are for access to wench controls.

Regards
Chris

Sag after install

I'm new here, planning a mild lift, adding a proper bumper and winch. With the weight out front, does anyone have a rule of thumb for sag per 100 lbs?

Bumper, winch, winch cable and inevitable 2nd battery make me wonder about going the a little higher with the 5100's @ time of install. I planned on 1.75 with spacers on back to "level" but maybe need to go 2.5?

Anyone?

You're gonna have to ditch the idea of using stock coils if you wanna do all that. You will need to look into heavier duty coils+shocks that can support 200+lbs of weight.

This is right on accurate, as i had 5100's with a winch and hidden winch mount and second battery the coils sagged badly, and under braking i really did not like the feel of the very heavy noise dive. So the next question is how much lift you want? If any.

Thanks to both of you.

I want just a bit of lift. i've been there/done that with significant lifts.

My first lift was in the 80's on my first L/C. Friends and I decided that 8" shackles were a good plan.

So in metal shop @ high school, we just cut them. That was NOT a good plan.

Anyhow, for my 4Runner, I'm thinking about "leveling" what I've got, and adding better tires at more or less stock height.

I've got no problem with beefier springs.

I'm just out of my element here.

Coil Suspension (w/KDSS) has me a little wary compared to my shackle experience.

I installed OME leaf springs on my FJ 40, but that was easy.

I don't mind wrenching. I just don't want to install new shocks/springs, then have to do it again right away! Call me lazy.

you will have to go 2.5 if you go 1.75 to be level. the picture is somewhat deceiving because of the factory fender cut outs, but it measures 1/4" higher in the rear using 2.5 and 1.75.

Hey all. New to this forum. Lots of great information here. My first 4Runner was a 2007 that I had for 7 years. Absolutely trouble free truck. My next was a 2013 FJ because I always liked them and wanted something a bit smaller. Fast forward to last year and a brand new baby boy, well it was time to go back to something bigger. My newest ride is a 2015 Trail and I love it. A couple months ago I let my FIL and buddy use it to trailer my boat and while it was in the parking lot someone hammered it with a trailer and didn't leave a note. Pissed would be an understatement. So Luke at 4x4 labs built this for me...

Luke did a great job and it looks awesome.

The only issue that you have to deal with is the washer fluid reservoir and 2 coolant lines. There were a couple of products made to change the location of the fluid reservoir but frankly I wanted to see if I could come up with something less expensive so this is what I came up with.
You but this for $10.00 at Advanced Auto.

Remove the old reservoir and drill two 1 3/8 holes in the new reservoir. Connect the old pumps and place it here with the included metal strap.

Hope this is useful to someone and I'll post back if it doesn't last long but so far so good. Thanks.

I like the Metaltech and Pelfreybilt bumpers the best..but how hard would it be to make a grill to dress up those large holes?

Another thing that I don't like is having a mess on each side of the wheel well. It's hard to tell from pictures but sometimes I see wires just hanging out and other times I do not. Curious if this is just sloppy attention to detail when installing or if others are going out of their way to make sure the implementation is tidy, etc.

A lot of these bumpers posted here seem to have a very tight gap between the bumper and fender. During certain offroad situations, the frame and body will flex quite a bit. Have any of you guys with these tight tolerance bumpers experienced any issues such as bent or popped fender flares/fenders? The Pelfrey and Metaltech bumpers line up with the headlights It looks as if you flex the frame enough the bumper would come in contact with the bottom of the headlights.

I myself have the Addicted Offroad bumper that has an extremely tight tolerance. I'm gonna go out on the trails this weekend to see how well it fairs when I get one of the front wheels off the ground. If I need to I'll either have to do a 1/2-3/4" body lift or elongate the existing holes so the bumper can go down a bit giving me at least a 1/2" gap.

They've never hit my headlights.

there is some slot for adjustment. That is why people can make them so close to the headlights. However, I think you have a point about flex, and may adjust mine down so I have approx 1/2" gap.

Great thread! I have been perusing it for the last couple of months (among many others) and decided to join.

On a related note, has anyone changed out JUST the front bumper and noted a change in mileage? I would expect a smallish change, though I briefly had a set of 20x10s with 33x12.5 Mud Claws (added a full 50 lbs per corner!) and was surprised that it only dropped about 1mpg over stock.

Also, and I might have missed it, but what does the stock bumper weigh? I just want a fair assessment of weight added when actually replacing the bumper with a fully-armored option.

Thanks!

If you want to keep the weight down on the front end....Amumunim.

I'm running aluminum on both of this years builds. Bumper+ Winch + Lights 87lbs
