Front Bumpers for 5th Gens

I'm running aluminum on both of this years builds. Bumper+ Winch + Lights 87lbs

I really like the aluminum heftyfab bumper, I'll buy one some day, but the math doesn't work out for 87lbs with winch and lights.

Bumper, 59lbs
Warn VR8000s, 62lbs (random winch selection)
Lights, couple pounds.

Help me understand how you maintained that setup less than 100lbs.

I don't think that 26# measurement is accurate. If you read over to the right, it states it weighs 64lbs, although that might be ship weight?

Smittybuilt lists it as weighing 94#, maybe with the steel cable?

Summit has it listed at 64# as well. I dunno which is correct, but 26# seems too low.

Probably true, I was just doing quick math yesterday and googles the XRC* and that's what if found when I made the post. I did not give it much thought, but it does seem off now that I think about it.

Agreed. I'm friends with the marketing guy at Warn and showed him the weights on the ZEON winches on amazon, because they listed the 10K as heavier than the 8K, his response? "The specs on amazon are basically BS. They're all the same weight between the 8/10/12K."

However, I am asking more for my objective understanding rather than a blanket worry about adding too much weight. But, I suppose nobody has weighed the stock bumper?

Also, does the increased aerodynamic drag (mostly from exposing the front wheels more) result in an appreciable change in mileage?

Physics says yes. A real world/real life tested answer to this would be impossible since you can't test it without adding the weight of a new bumper. So you would never know exactly which variable is effecting the gas mileage unless someone drove considerable distances with their front bumper off before replacing it. The closest test would be if someone had both a lo-pro style winch plate bumper (relentless fab, C4, SSO) and then switched to an aluminum, light weight full bumper that was roughly the same weight. There may be some members out there who did this switch, but those who are modding that much are probably not recording or concerned with their gas mileage in the first place.

Their most certainly is a greater drag on the vehicle when the stock skins are modified. The Toyota engineers spend vast amount of time and dollars to reduce the friction coefficients in every way possible, from tires width to aerodynamics. They go so far as to put tiny defusers or splitters on top of the mirrors. In short, lift, tires, more offset wheels, bumpers, roof rack, tow hitch, load, exc are all going to negatively affect the vehicles MPG performance.

Truth is, we will never know exactly how much (unless someone is willing to invest as much as Toyota has on each component) and the bumpers posted here are subjective and hold very little real world value.

Depends on the aluminum. I can tell you I have seen one of Hefty's Aluminum take a massive impact on a Nissan and it did very good. I have his skids on two of my trucks and on my 5th gen I literally destroyed his aluminum skid...BUT.. I hit a bolder while blasting through a puddle (in Colorado with Chris with me)and it literally brought my vehicle to a stop. It was a massive impact, to the point it killed the truck. I got out and checked and the skid kept everything safe. fact is, I'm still running that smashed skid waiting on my new one.

As far as the bumpers go, there are reasons you want aluminum over steel, if these reasons don't affect you, then it really does not matter what route you go.. For me I like that the aluminum will never rust even when I drill holes in it (being in ohio). I like that it weighs much less than the steel, and I like the fact I have been able to use t without it bending on me (pulled two stumps out with the winch, one 12" and one 20").

Thing is, some people hate the thought of using an aluminum bumper. Some people think (regardless of fact) aluminum is weaker than steel. These same people are often running the Factor55 Aluminum winch thimbles..lol

Obviously I'm going to say Pelfrey. I have seen the Proline, and it's well built, I'm just not a fan of the looks.

I say....if you don't rock crawl or hit things with your truck often...aluminum should be high on the list. Only a few places do this...pelfreyfilt being the best looking IMHO.

The trucks weight a lot and don't have huge power to begin with.

If I needed and wanted protection, I'd shop for light weight. Skids, bumpers, racks...LIGHT. My only steel would be sliders as they take a pounding if you use them.


Just something to consider.

New to the forum. Wifey owns a 2016 SR5 Premium in silver. Someone ran a shopping cart into it shortly after we bought it. One of the bumper nubs broke off under the headlights where the bumper meets the fender. So the bumper sticks out there and the only way to fix it is to replace the bumper. We were quoted $1k so time for a aftermarket bumper. I am ordering the Pelfeybilt Aluminum bumper and was wondering if anyone has color matched my 2016 silver in powder coat? Any pics and info on powder color used?
