front door won't stay open

Seems that my front driver's side door on my '98 won't stay open. When I push it open it wants to swing back closed, especially if there is wind or its parked on an uphill slope. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks...

It’s likely a worn door checker. You can repair them with the repair kit linked in the DIY video by [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] and [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] :

Thanks! I have a couple rebuild kits but am waiting on someone (ahem) to send me back his cores so
I can get a new set ready. Happy to help if he does or if I can get a line on another used set.

Personally I think the rebuilt ones are superior to OEM. It’s a moly filled nylon rather than plain nylon. More grip and will wear longer.

I couldn't agree with you more. The new oem I got was disappointing and slightly better than my old worn out ones in keeping to door open.

I forgot who posted it, a member had his rig pointing up a hill, opened his door and it stayed open. I thought that was impressive.

Can you give us a re-fresher how much better a holding power moly filled nylon has compared to oem?

Yup, @tmbtim (or Timmy The Toolman on YouTube) has great info and a very descriptive vid on YT on this very subject. It involves buying a cheap door checker repair kit from eBay (as opposed to going the Toyota OEM route, which is $50/door) and replacing the plastic spacers that put pressure on the two sides of the mechanism that keep the door open. It’s simpler than it sounds. Just look for his video called “Door Checker Repair.”

Well, the moly filler is just going to increase the wear resistance and lower the sliding friction. I think the new stoppers are slightly oversized to give more grab.

I’m amazed at how steep of an incline they will still hold the door open.

Yeah I am kinda getting tired of my left leg getting bashed by the door on even slight inclines, I need these parts....
