Front End "Groan" when in 4WD (low and hi)

I was looking around the site for info on this and couldn't find anything that fit my description. Just like the title says, I get this sound that I think is power steering groan when making turns on somewhat off-camber roads. I only hear it when 4hi or 4low is engaged; I can make tight turns on the pavement in 2wd without any sounds. So I am worried if maybe its a front differential or CV issue that I am mis-identifying. Any input is appreciated!

It sounds like you're just binding the drivetrain by making sharp turns with the transfer case locked. There was likely sufficient traction in those corners to navigate them in 2WD. You won't hurt anything, just don't make lots of sharp turns on high traction surfaces with the t-case locked, and don't punch the gas with the wheel cranked when you're in 4WD unless you're on a surface that you know will allow for wheel slip.

Everyone worries about this messing up drivetrain components, and maybe it would if you drove around in 4WD 24/7, but in my experience, the front tires will hop/break traction under bind before anything in the driveline breaks.

Yea unfortunately a fair amount of trails I do are switchback/shelf roads so jumping in and out of 2wd and 4wd isn't an option sometimes. Might have not noticed it before, but it seems like it started this (summer) season.

I used to live in Basalt, CO, so I'm familiar with the high mountain roads out there. I miss the mild/moderate off roading in Colorado, some of the best in the country. I agree, sometimes you're going to bind things up on tight turns. I found it helped to be extremely gentle on the throttle so you aren't applying a lot of power to a bound up drivetrain.

It's a stout truck and it can take a whole lot of USE, as long as ya don't abuse it. It's a tool, not a jewel.

If your steering is pressed all the way against the stop it could be the power steering making noise

The normal front diff issues makes noise in 2wd after using 4wd, so if yours is quiet when coasting/decelerating when in 2wd it's not the normal front diff needle bearing
