On my IFS 2nd gen 3.0 with auto trans and ADD front diff,
I am getting a grinding/rubbing/buzzing noise from the passenger side front that is somewhat intermittent. Small bumps in the road will either start or stop the noise at all measurable speeds. I have eliminated the brake calipers/pads and wheel bearings as possibilities. When shifted into 4WD, there is a chirp and then the noise ceases. I figure this must indicate a problem in the diff or CV axle when freewheeling only. Maybe the ADD isn't fully disengaging? I am going to remove the cv axles and take a closer look at those. Boots are not torn though, and there doesnt seem to be any play at the cv joints themselves.
What are your thoughts? If the problem is diff related, how involved is a bearing job? a rebuild?
