There have a been a number of people asking to identify a mysterious noise in the front end of their 4Runners. Typically it's described as a metal on metal noise as I would have described mine. I was pretty sure it was related to the skid plates but could never find anything wrong with mine.
It was a very loud noise that predictably happened when I went over a curb or speed bump on pavement. I was also intermittent which made it harder to locate. I finally found the problem and was surprised to learn it was the rear of the left front fender rubbing against the door jamb area where the clip had fallen out and the fender moved out 1/4 - 1/2". Obviously not metal on metal. I pushed it back in place and the noise totally disappeared.
Maybe not what others are experiencing but figured it can't be unique just to my truck and may help someone down the line.
