Front rattle maybe under the hood, please help!

I just drove my truck and I was at a drive though and at the front I heard a weird rattling noise. I thought it was my broken passenger mirrior that a truck hit but this rattle sounded like it came from under the hood. being a 2006 I think this noise shouldn't happen but its be raced hard and off-road hard so I wanna ask for help and see if anyone else with a 4th gen with this sound. the thing is that this sound happens at 500-600 RPM idling but when driving there is no noise. please help!

Check the heat shields above the muffler etc. Mine had come loose (a couple of the nuts had pulled through that weak thin aluminum. I just added some washers to mine - problem solved (at least for me!). My symptoms were similar to yours; tinny rattle only heard near idle.

Nice, pull the engine out and let me know if you find something. I've got a heat shield rattle going on 2 months, and it's too cold to check it out. It does serve a purpose in parking lots. The rattle turns heads, keeping them alert while crossing the street.

That could be helpful with me in the university parking lot. lol I always have someone back out right in front of me.the rattle only happens to me when I;m idling and it just happen tonight.

Crack your window when you're next to a wall or listen when there's low speed accelerations. Mine rattles and is barely noticiable but it is annoying. Your next mode might be a louder stereo

Maybe it's your footbrake. Last time i had a rattle like that, i troubleshot it down to where my footbrake was loose. Had the dealer tighten it up. And all is good.

I'll try a little more detail when the truck is at normal temperature (this happened yesterday) and I was stopped at a drive though and I was at 500-510 RPM and you know when the truck revs to 550-600 rpm? thats when the rattle happens. I didn't drive the 4runner today to school, I drove my new truck and I was going to talk to my friends and see what they think. I also ask this site as they have helped with the 4runner and even helped me buy the new Powerstroke.

I was looking around again for the noise and realized that the rattle only happens when the truck is in drive. and any other gear there is no noise.

Chances are its the heat shields surrounding the cat under the drivers seat. Bang the muffler and you'll hear the rattle throughout the underbay. I just checked and found it to be the guilty culprit. I'm not sure how to stop it from rattling though. Maybe removing and rebending and replacing the shield might work.

I had the same symptoms under the same conditions. I took the skids off to do the lube and there was a lot of dirt and gravel trapped in them which i got rid of. I put 'em back and made sure they were tight (careful with the bolt torque) and haven't noticed the rattle since.

Doing the lube also involves removing the heat shield which may have been put back tighter.

So, loose heat shield or loose and/or dirty skids. I'd be surprised if it was not one of these.

ALRIGHT!! thank you everybody for the input! I found that that the noise is coming from the skid plate. theres like junk inside it. I working on it right now as the temp is comfy! again thanks!

upon future looking I think the skid plate is bent. its on the driver side and seems to be hitting either the sway bar bushing or the lower wish bone. you give it a little pound an it hit that and rattles.
