Front Tires Locking Up

Went down to the beach in my 2 wheel drive 3rd gen today, and did a little mudding in the back trails. Everything was going great until my front tires locked up and wouldent spin. I couldent get the thing to moves, the back tires would spin, but the front tires wouldent let it go anywhere. We tried some things like messing with the e-brake, and turning the truck off and back on. we finally went and got a 4x4 dodge 1500 to come and pull me out. While he was dragging me, the tires finally decided to spin a little bit, but the would still lock up every few seconds. After about 50 yards they started rolling like normal.

Once we got the 4runner back onto solid ground, I talked to the guy who pulled me out a little. He said that he has seen this before, and that it was mud geting between the brakes and holding the wheel.

Has anyone ever seen this before? It sure did scare me at first, having no clue what could make them lock up like that.

I had a similar experience a very long time ago - in 1988. Took the truck on the beach and had the front tires lock up. Ended up bringing a bulldozer to get myself out.

The truck was a 4x4, but was missing the front driveshaft. Needless to say that a new front driveshaft was installed the next day. :D
