Front Wheel Bearing & Brake Question

Ok, pretty basic but sometimes ya gotta ask.

I have a 95 4Runner, needed to replace a C/V joint and fix the front brakes,
was a bit premature but decided to repack the bearings and cut the rotors
at the same time. So question one, drag test, I tested multiple times
but my tension readings are at the low end if not below as set forth in the FSM. I retorqued/reset bearings 3x and readings were pretty much unchanged, so I left it. I'm comfortable with the bearings as is. But can anyone fill me in on the purpose of the drag test?

Second, almost embarassed to asked, front brake pads, for the life of me I
don't know which pad goes on which side. respectfully and sheepishly asking
for guidance.

The drag is just to make sure you have a light preload on the bearings and not too much. Some people would get in there and crank it down, then burn up a bearing or seat in short order if toyota didn't spec it for a load with a fish scale!

Rule of thumb, at least for me, make sure it spins, doesn't grind or feel rough when turning the hub, and in a week, or around a hundred miles or so, jack up the front and give the wheel another test to make sure there's no play in there and that it isn't super tight.

Pads? Couldn't tell ya which one goes in first! Maybe someone else can chime in on this one!

I've never gotten consistent results with the drag test (probably because I suck), so I use 4Crawler's method.

The second method seems to produce similar results and is a bit more straight forward:
• Torque spindle nut to 43 ft. lbs. ◦ Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
◦ Spin hub left 4-5 rotations

• Loosen inner spindle nut ◦ Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
◦ Spin hub left 4-5 rotations

• Torque spindle nut to 43 ft. lbs. ◦ Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
◦ Spin hub left 4-5 rotations

• Loosen inner spindle nut ◦ Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
◦ Spin hub left 4-5 rotations

• Torque spindle nut to ~21 ft. lbs.

I dunno about the brake pads though. What's the difference between them?

for the bearing preload, I go by feel. in the last 20 some odd years ive been doing this, I have never one time used a scale. no burned up bearings yet...

for the pads. depending on the exact pads, it may not matter. but usually the inner pad will have 2 squealers, the outer either one, or none.

I don't think you can put them on wrong. the pad with dual squealers wont fit into place without hitting the hub, thus it must go inside. if no squealers, then it shouldn't matter where they go.

Good link, basically what I do anyway. But because I'm that guy, I do have a fish scale.
Each time I do the bearings I KNOW when it reals good, but I'll be damned if I don't take out that scale anyway!

Edit: missed quoting KidV's post

Ah ha! a brake answer that makes sense!!
thank you(though I do feel stupid for asking)

no problem.

oddly enough, I just did brakes on a 95 4runner this afternoon. :D

I can confirm, double squealer goes to the inside. lol.
