frozen HID ballasts

Hey 4rnrs with HIDs,
Did anyone, in this beautiful weather, got frozen ballasts that wouldn’t start bulbs?
This is crazy, it is only 23ºF outside.

I have had a Mod-Express kit on my Tacoma for years with no issues. While my vehicles are in the garage while at home, they have been outside for extended periods of time in single digit temps. The ballasts have never had an issue starting a bulb. I would tend to think you may have a bad ballast. Whether or not it is a coincidence that it chose to go out during the cold weather, I don't know. The weather may have been the last straw. I would contact the Mfg. if they are under warranty.

Yea, still funny to me how everyone freaks out when we get a little white stuff on the ground. I love driving when nobody is out, but I stay off the road if I don't have to go anywhere because of other drivers. I would be devastated if someone smashed the 4R.

My wife and I went up towards Mt. St. Helens a little over a week ago and there was hardly any snow in sight. Quite a different story now.

Have fun and hope you get this ballast issue figured out soon.

Aww Maaan! Damet! :frusty:

hey, they have more positive feedbacks vs negative:bravo:. i think they still sell a good products. overall i am happy with set up. also i read that they have good customer service so it shouldn’t be an issue getting replacement. i let you know how it goes, but i won’t hear from them probably until monday.
you just want HID, right? since you already have projectors.

TRS Products

I've had my TRS Retro kit (Quad bixenon and fogs) in for nearly two years now. Never had an issue with the ballasts. I used to live in Northern BC, -40 Degrees C and never had any of my 6 ballasts quit. Buy with confidence. TRS takes care of their customers.

Just my $0.02CAD

Are you sure it's the ballast and not the relays. One of my relays from TRS let some water in and everything got nasty inside. It would only work when it was dry and after the engine compartment warmed up. The clear TRS relays have and led indicator Olin them to let you know it's working. If they are gone they will send you new ones for free or you can grab new ones from the parts store like I did

I'm inclined to agree with mace. Strikes me as really odd, that even if a ballast were to fail due to cold, they would both fail at the same time.

Do you have a VOM? Should be easy enough to check if the relay is working. (Or maybe just tap it with something)

Do post up what you eventually find.

Lightwerkz did my retro but I've had 0 issues with my ballasts. I did get the OEM Denso ballasts though and don't know which you got. Like others, I'd check the relays 1st.

4everunner, which Morimoto Ballasts did you have? There was a known issue with the Morimoto SS ballasts for cold weather issues, flickering and randomly not turning on the first try. I was just over at TRS the other day, they told me there was a recall for the SS and gave me brand new Morimoto DSP which fixed all my issues. Their customer service is awesome, personally I wouldn't buy anywhere else.

So I troubleshoot everything tonight, and thank God it was easy to find the problem. I didn't have time last night to troubleshoot. Here is what I found-blown fuse; went to auto store and got replacement. I replaced fuse and vua-lah! It burned again, I burned couple more and called my father in law for an opinion, he is a low voltage-geek. Long story short. I Disconnected one of the ballasts, replaced fuse and it worked. Then I took good ballast and tried on the other side and it worked. So here is the problem-

What kind of ballasts do you have?

I had the 3five ballasts since last May. When the weather turned colder, they started not igniting the bulbs consistently, as xpeppyx mentioned. Got the revised version in Dec. Both worked well throughout the polar vortex until last week. One of the ballasts went out and had to contact TRS again for a replacement. Usually their warranty replacement policy consists of you cutting the cords on the ballast and sending in a picture with the serial number and cut cords. Send them an email, but they do deal with a lot of emails per day. I called in after the 4th day because the email lag and 2nd ballast problem was making me inpatient.
