Unfortunately, I have to part ways with my 4Runner. This truck has become a project that I can't tackle myself. The cylinder head needs replacing / current one needs to be machined or a better option may be to drop in a used engine. The vehicle still starts and runs, but it is obviously rough on 5 cylinders.
I've owned this truck for 2 years and used it as my daily driver. I would love to fix it, but paying for labor costs puts me way out of budget. It would be a steal for someone who could do the work themselves.
It has 193K on it, clean title, and 3 owners (myself, the guy that sold it to me who had it for a month before changing his mind, and a family in TX who drove most of the miles). Transmission is strong and there are no other known mechanical issues. Interior/Exterior in good condition for 18 year old vehicle (small crack on windshield).
This problem came out of nowhere when a spark plug blew (cylinder #1) and completely melted the coil pack (see last pic). Not 100% why this originally happened, previous owner cross-threaded spark plugs?... Regardless, I had a shop put in a new coil pack and timesert, but my luck struck again 2 weeks later. Same thing happened - blown plug, melted pack. The timesert had failed.
I have been advised to either replace the head, machine the current head, or drop in a used engine to resolve the problem. I have deferred to selling the vehicle because I don't have the time or money to pay for labor costs.
