I am the 3rd owner and bought the rig from an enthusiast off IH8MUD back in 2011 after my first 3rd gen was totalled by a DUI Driver. I bought this rig with 168k miles and it now sits just under 203,000. I have kept a detailed maintenance log of everything done to the rig since the day I took ownership. There are some scratches and a couple door dings, but nothing out of the ordinary for a 13 year old 4Runner that has been used for around town driving, camping, and occassional trail offroad trips. All maintenance is up to snuff and the vehicle runs great in every way. I have owned a 4runner as my primary vehicle for the past 14 years (original one was a 2000 SR5) so I am very familiar with the ins and outs of these rigs and have been on this forum a long time.

I considered just driving this rig until it stopped running, but now I need an SUV with a 3rd row seat, so I'm willing to part ways...for another 4Runner :)

Did you ever get that transmission problem worked out? I read a couple of your threads and it seemed the trans was shifting kinda harsh. You said you changed the fluid a couple times and it was a little better, just wondering. I really like the ride, good price to for all the maintenance done to it. PM me, Im interested. Thanks.
 
Getting it dealt with this weekend, by way of an OEM Remanufactured Trans from Toyota. 4th gear has developed a nasty grinding noise but is usable. Gears 1-3 are perfect and torque converter is locking up fine. Fluid still looks great! Ha! Since the engine and everything else on the rig is running so well I decided just to pony up and spend about $500 more than I would have for a rebuild and swap in the factory replacement. Remanufactured>Rebuild. This also means that I've decided to keep the rig for the foreseeable future, which was actually a decision I was leaning towards after going to see a 5th gen and not being all that impressed. I think my next rig will be a Sequoia when my family really needs a 3rd row. I had a guy in LA begging to come buy it for $6000 just FYI for price point, but since I didn't like the 5th gens I didn't go through with it. A week later the grinding noise developed. I've just been driving around with O/D off so as not to further stress 4th gear.

After much research, it looks like the 2001-2002 have started to develop a reputation for trans failure around 200k possibly due to different electronics. We will all probably start to see more failure threads.

In the end I think it's good that I held on to it and a new owner didn't get stuck with a trans swap right off the bat. I definitely didn't see that coming, but things seem to work themselves out like that.

All that to say, mods can close this thread.

Back up for sale!

Hi All,

I am considering putting by 3rd Gen back up for sale as my wife and I are going to pick up a 5th Gen before the end of the year. A couple things I anticipate being asked:

1. Transmission - As mentioned above, I replaced the original transmission last fall with a Toyota OEM Remanufactured Unit and had it installed by the dealer. It has been running and shifting flawlessly.

2. Overall condition - Great! Vehicle obviously has some more mileage. Odometer is at 215k now.

3. Any new issues - The only issue that has come up is cosmetic. The clear coat on the front passenger side fender is peeling a bit on the top and it looks like it may be spreading to the hood and tops of doors on the passenger side. I did replace the passenger side CV shaft and Lower Ball joint. CV was getting sloppy and found a tiny tear in the lower ball joint boot. I have a Driver Side CV shaft new in the box that will go to the buyer. Also, On both sides, I replaced inner and outer Tire Rod Ends last year.

I'm going to list it locally for $5,500. I'm more willing to negotiate with forum members so let me know if your are interested.

Thanks! It's a Rigid LED Light Bar. I think the 10" and the hybrid Flood/Driving beam pattern. I just couldn't keep living with a non-functional hood scoop :)
 
BUMP for a 3rd Gen in CA that is not shady :)

Also, it's now posted for sale locally on craigslist at a price that is more in line with market value. I'm preaching to the choir when I say these rigs are hard to find in this condition especially with the type of records I've kept. Whomever buys my 4Runner will have zero questions or uncertainty about what they are getting. I hope my price here reflects my loyalty to the 4Runner to the community and my motivation to pass this on to another enthusiast.
