FTS 5th gen Snorkel Install

The next (and supposedly last) batch ships to me on the 7th of July and will be here by the 10th. So about 3 weeks still.

There are a couple reasons why we are stopping importing these.
The main reason is the cost keeps going up. When we started the cost from FTS for a single snorkel was $615. If I imported several at a time it got the cost down to $415 and charged $465 shipped. Now we are paying $433 a snorkel and fedex (because of the new size restrictions) has bumped the shipping from $35-$50 to $45-$60. This has never been an attempt to make money, we simply were importing them because we can (we also wanted some for ourselves) and it saves money. But the last batch we sent 3 to the west coast and on all three it cost us roughly $20 a snorkel out of pocket to because of shipping fees. So you may be thinking... "raise the price"....here is my thinking

-Snorkel $433 (includes $12 duties)
-Shipping to WA $62.17
-Paypal Fees (3.5%) $17.65
-Packing material (they ship 2 snorkels per carton so half the snorkels we sell we have to buy giant boxes) $9

Total cost for snorkel delivered to customer $522

So if I raised the price to a break even point, you would save under $100 from just buying one directly from FTS.

To date we have imported an impressive 64 of these darn things, they are a pain to handle and a pain to ship. It was supposed to be a single group buy and turned into a steady flow of. At some point you look at the books and see $30k COGS and a profit of -.09%......and you have to just call it a day.


Sorry for the long winded explanation, I just want to be clear and did not want to sound like a DB by saying (I just don't want to import them anymore).

PLUS..... Looks like there may be another player in the game.

Performance for me did not increase, and I did not expect it. Unfortunately for me, on CA gas, and extreme heat, my gas mileage has been suffering a little bit, about .5- 1 mpg loss over the last 2-3 months, as compared to pre snorkel. I would imagine that I just have a lot of heat soak issues right now, and the crappy CA ethanol gas, but we will see as time goes on. I am sure I need to hook up tech stream and take a long ride to verify I am not starving the engine of air, which could be possible.

I actually like the low profile of the FTS over the Safari so I'd like to get one of the last one's to try... Order placed!

I can't believe they would release something that wouldn't be engineered to provide enough air, and I haven't seen any complaints until [MENTION=53960]itsdchz[/MENTION] made the above statement; now I'm slightly concerned. I'm towing a Turtleback trailer and can use all the air flow I can get...

Let me reiterate- I do NOT think it is the snorkel that has decreased MPGs, nor do I think the T4R is being starved of air. I am only showing concern as I do not want people to expect that it will have an added HP like a RAM air or CAI. This is simply a re-route of air from lower fender, nothing more. I do not want anyone to think I am stating I gained or lost any HP, or air. I will be running some non ethanol gas for a few tanks to verify of it has the same effect. I think the gas is the issue, not the snorkel, but will perform as much testing as I can to compare numbers.

Thanks! I would NOT worry about the snorkel, as I have over 6,000 miles since installing, and I would have had a CEL, or weird numbers on my scanguage. All look the same as pre snorkel.

I think the Snorkels in my experience can hurt MPG. I have nothing to back that up, just thinking... The ECU determines how much fuel to spray by how much air its getting.....you get more air...ECU gives more fuel.


NOTE: The smallest part of the snorkel intake is still larger than the smallest part of the OEM intake hose.

Wouldn't you think that the engine would only take as much as it needs in that case? Since it is not being forcibly rammed into the throttle body like a turbo or supercharger does (at least not forced to a degree that it would necessarily be getting more air)...? I too have nothing to back that up. Just thinking out loud.
 
Did some searching on the interwebz but there wasn't any readily available official test data for snorkel performance on any platform. There are a lot of vendors that claim horsepower increases, but no dyno info to prove it.

I'm going to run some baseline tests with my Torque app on MAF, Intake Temp, Throttle Position and AFR without the snorkel and then share the same data post snorkel install in a month or so. I'm really interested to see what we end up with. Obviously this won't prove HP gains but will at least give an indication of intake changes.

Any other parameters you suggest I record during this test?

a ran a boatload of baselines before installation through Techstream and ScanGuage. Have not been able to perform any after tests because it is vacation season... sorry
 
[MENTION=64685]TOY2G[/MENTION] What type of winch set-up is that inside a factory 10-13 SRT bumper??? That looks SLICK with that paint-to-match snorkel to boot!

True that, but I like the low profile and slickness of FTS.
Just received it, not very impressed with quality though.
I can see the fibers on the inside, like fiberglass, since it's made out of Reinforced fiberglass plastic. Anyway, at this point, I'm gonna find the way to reinforce it even more so may be with Rhino Lining to make it more scratch resistant as I find it to be susceptible to scratches. yea, I don't think it's thick enough...but I still like it, like my old gf.
