Fuel gauge out of calibration... Help!

Lets get to the point of my thread... I need your help. My fuel gauge is out of calibration. Is there any way to recalibrate?

Reason for my question....This issue started about a month ago. I packed up the 4runner to the brim to go camping at Lake McConahay. The entire interior was filled with camping gear, coolers, 2 adults, 1 kid and a large dog. The roof was loaded with more camping gear and a bike while the hitch had 2 bikes loaded on a bike rack. Needless to say the 4Runner was loaded down. The rear was definitely squatting. Anyways, we leave Denver for the 220+ mile trip and my fuel level is dropping like a rock. I think I may have been getting 13mpg, so it was expected. I stop and fill up when my fuel gauge is at 1/4 tank and I fill it with 13 gallons or so. I was surprised, but attributed it for the rear squatting a bit. Of course drove the rest of the way to the lake and home with the same results. I unloaded the 4runner and drove it around the past couple weeks experiencing the same issue. I reset my trip odometer a couple times and got the same results. This is what I calculated today:

Miles Traveled - 281.8
Fuel level = 1/8 tank. Fuel light came on.
Gallons of Fuel - 15.688
Computer MPG = 17.4mpg
Hand calculated MPG = 17.9mpg
Cruising Range Left = 17miles

I used to get over 340 gallons per tank. So, if I put in only 15 gallons of fuel, I in theory still had about 7-8 gallons of fuel still in the tank, or roughly 1/3 tank. All of this leads me to believe my fuel gauge is out of calibration. Am I on the right track? Am I missing something? Any feedback is appreciated.

Your fuel gauge is fine. Mine was doing that from day one when I bought this truck. It is purposefully reads low vs real fuel level. I drive for miles (10-20) when that indicator pegged down on empty and range meter says 0 miles for few days because when I fill up I can only get little over 20 gallons in, meaning I still had nearly 3 gallons in the tank. 340 miles range is realistic but your trip meter is rigged to read low to keep people from running out. One more unrelated thing - try Ethanol-free gas and you'll see MPG go up by at least 0.5 MPG in the city also your engine will run hell a lot better (more power).

Mine is similar, but it's always been that way. If I fill up at 0 miles to E, I can only get 20 gallons in the tank. It's a 23 gallon tank. I thought I only had a 20 gallon tank for the entire first year of ownership.

If it was always this way, I would understand, but it hasn't been. This is new. I used to fill up on empty and get in about 20 gallons, now I fill up and i put in about 15. Why?

I'd reset both trip meters and your multi function range and MPG meter. About that dial gauge - it was never meant to be accurate but you can ask the dealer to put you truck on Teachstream and possibly calibrate the unit. Honestly, I don't think they can do it. They'll try to sell you a new sending module and maybe even new pump because the sending float is in same assembly. Or you can save your $ and live with it. G.L.

so you fill it up when gauge says empty LOL you are gonna get screwed !!!
our vehicles have an in tank electric fuel pump and the sender unit will get heat damaged .. heat damage on the connector electrical pins. higher resistance will indicate that the tank is at a incorrect level.

I fill up the tank when at 1/4-1/3 level.. then I add fuel and when 4 gallons goes in it moves 1/4 on a gauge.

when the gauge says 1/4 I put in 15 gallons then its at the full mark.
when it is at zero empty it should have 3 gallons or so.. not good heat damage an expensive repair .. don't do this type fuel action..

Well... as weird as it sounds... the issue corrected itself. I didn't do anything except take the 4Runner offroad. Must have shaken something up? I don't know. But now when the gauge reads empty, I add about 20 gallons. Back to normal!
