Fuel gauge problems

I have a 1995 4Runner with just over 180,000 miles (of which the last 30,000 or so are mine). Since I've owned it, the fuel gauge has had some quirks. For the first 50 miles on a full tank, the gauge will slowly decrease to about half-full and then slowly go back up to nearly full. In the last six months or so, it's started doing the same thing as it gets near empty. Once it reaches about a quarter tank, it will decrease rapidly over about 10 miles to completely empty before going back up to a quarter tank. It's very predictable and repeatable so it really isn't that big of a problem but it is a bit annoying.

Has anyone run into this sort of thing? Any thoughts on what might be causing it?

Bad sending unit in tank is most likely.
You can pull it out and try cleaning the windings with some electrical contact cleaner.
