I bought a 1985 4Runner and I am not familiar with all the little quirks of this truck. I filled up the trk and the gauge went to full now the trk is empty and the gauge still reads full could the float be stuck are just a bad sending unit?

Sending unit is probably the culprit or a bd wire. I would check the wiring and ground the on to the sending unit.y gauge was very erratic I pulled it and cleaned the contacts on the unit inside the tank. Reinstalled and it has been working fine. Sorry didn't take any pics. But I have done it before and followed a write up on the web. A little searching around and you can finally find the same or similar.

Havig a hard time finding a sending unit, anyone have a place I might find one? Every place I called or looked up didn't have one.

The sending unit rarely fails in a way that causes a Full reading.
Have you pulled it out to check it ?
And have you checked the wiring to it?
And if it does turn out to be the problem, it's a dealer only part (if it's still even available)

I haven't checked the wire or pulled it out but I will do that before I buy anything. Do I have to drop the tank to get the sender out?

If your having trouble finding a sending unit, you might try a discounting dealer, or your local Toyota dealer. Yes, the tank is probably going to need to be dropped. Make sure to get a new seal, they have upgraded them.
