Fuel guage issue. Please advise.

Hi! I'm having a fuel guage issue. My mechanic just changed the fuel sender unit but the gas guage is still unresponsive goes up and down and gas empty light also blinks randomly. Can anyone offer some advice on the issue?
Also, can anyone tell me when your car is off does your gas meter go to empty? Or does it stay up to how much gas you have in your tank?

If your mechanic replaced the sender in the tank the gauge in the dash must be bad. You could just get a scangauge or ultragauge and set it up for distance to empty and forget about the dash.

On my 98 the gas gauge would stay were it was when you turned it off but on my 2002 the gauge goes to empty when you turn it off.
