As it has been stated ad nauseam before, we have two basic problems facing us (aside from our huge amount of consumption):
The US Dollar is worthless - and becomes more so by the day. Our government is just printing more of them, rather than making any attempt to control or reduce spending. In a nutshell, we are simply trying to borrow our way out of debt. The Greenback is not backed by anything other than a promise that we will always pay our debts.
The other problem is that we have abundant domestic energy reserves - which we refuse to harvest. On a related note, we have failed to increase our refinery capacity. All the crude oil in the world is useless if we cannot refine it into diesel fuel, gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, etc., etc. We are dependent upon foreign nations for crude oil - as well as refined product. That is bad, both from an economic and a strategic viewpoint.
