Fuel pump issue

When starting my 98 4runner (195000 miles, still young)it acts as if it might have bad fuel or no fuel. Eventually it cranks, this doesn't happen everytime. I've been through several tanks of gas since I first noticed it. A friend said his car did the same and it was the fuel pump. Is this a good place to begin.

First thing I would do is replace the fuel filter. Then hook up a fuel pressure guage to see if you have pressure in those times that it wont start. If you don't...then the pump is the place to check.
