Fuel tank capacity?

I’m reading online that our runners have a 23 gallon tank. But every time I fill up it only ever takes about 16 gallons?

What do you guys see?

Do I have a messed up gauge or is there just that much reserve?

For mine, right at E or when the warning light comes on, I still have 3 gallons left. So each 1/4 of the gauge is 5 gallons, and 3 below the line.

So when you fill up you can put up to 20 gallons in?

I normally fill to about 20 gallons on E.

You do not want to push your luck and use all 23 gallons, you may risk damaging your fuel pump and air in your fuel system getting into the motor is no good.

Oh yeah I don’t want to push it to empty for sure. I definitely agree on keeping a bit in the tank for safe measure. But I just don’t get why I can never get more than 16 gallons in there. Literally have never seen 17 or more. And I fill up when I can after the light has come on.

When mine comes on, I'm close to 6 gallons left - it's actually probably 1/4 tank on the nose.. Not quite 7 gallons, like OP, but still more than average.

I know I can go 300 miles no matter what and always have well over 3 gallons left, so I just fill up on the day or two after I cross 300 at "my" gas station near the house. It's usually 16-17.5 gallons at that point. My hand calculated MPG is usually within the EPA range for my V8 2WD at 16-19mpg. On the lower end in the winter and much higher in the summer.

Once the low fuel light comes on, it's about 20.5-21 gallons on my '08.

Same on my 5th Gen. I was on a road trip recently and wasn't paying attention to the gauge. The red light came on and I found a gas station and put approx. 21 gallons in it. Gave me a bit of a scare.

Im the same, even when the range shows me around 50km left, i fill it up till it clicks and its usually around 65litres or 17 gallons for me.

when the empty light comes on, it does not mean it's really empty. you have a few gallons left, around 3-4 gallons, good enough to find a gas station and fuel up. it's just scary to think about it. I guess everyone gets stressed out when the nearest gas station is 21 miles away from you. trust me, you'll get there with the remaining fuel left. this happened to my wife once, she called me that fuel empty reminder just lit up, she was like 15 miles away and she kept driving and reached home no problem.

is the tank dented, or smashed in?

I rarely if ever let it get down below a 1/4. mostly because its too expensive to fill when empty. haha.
plus I don't want any issues with the fuel pump. the pumps are cooled with the fuel. draining down low occasionally wont be a problem, but I wouldn't want to do it regularly.

I had an Isuzu amigo a few years ago, it had a 22 gallon tank, but wouldn't ever take more than 15 or so. crawled underneath, and the entire bottom of the tank was smashed in.

Mine takes 10 gallons from 1/2 tank. It’s been a while since I let it get any lower, trying to avoid the debris in the bottom of tank thing, true or not. Better safe than sorry!

tough break, amigo.

I run mine very low & have put in up to 24 1/2 gallons several times. The last two gallons are always very tough to get in; must fill very slowly.

A few months ago I drove 18 miles after the Range computer had reached 0. It took 21.5 gallons that time. My Empty light comes on at exactly 20 miles remaining.
