Fuse Keeps Blowing Out

I just picked up my 05 4Runner Sport last tuesday and I love it. I put my XM radio in it yesterday and hooked up my FM modular, had to take just about everything out to get to the radio, which I was able to take everything apart due to all the good info on this site.

So anyways. I have been having problems programming the power door locks and spent an hour this morning and got them to work how I want to. So this after noon when I was leaving I used the unlock button on the key fob and the doors unlocked and I heard the beeps like I should. But then when I got in the car, I noticed that none of my interior lights were on but didn't think anything of it. I needed to get into the back so I went to unlock the doors with the key fob, and it was dead.

So now I can not get the clock to keep time, resets every time I turn the key of, same for the trip. Have no interior lights or dash lights or vanity lights. The rear audio system is deed, including the guages. And the center computer thing that tells you the time and miles and ouside temp is all messed up. Like I said, it keeps resetting itself everytime I turn the key off.

Everything that isn't working is listed in the owners book as the number 17 fuse under the hood. So I took a look and it was blown out. So I got a pack of new ones and the second I stuck it in, it blow out, you could hear it sizzle before the circut in the fuse melted.

So now I have no clue what the problem could be since none of the things on the 17 fuse has nothing to do with the radio, which makes me think the FM modular is not doing the damage.

So does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for? I looked over connections to make sure I pluged things in correctly, and I have. I'm lost and need to get whatever is shorting this fuse out fixed asap.

Let's start with just a little more info.
I'm not sure which fuse is "#17" so what size of fuse is it and what is the circuit name or location in the fuse box (look at the inside top cover/lid of the fuse box)? EDIT: Changing my guess to the 10A DOME fuse (I'm guessing the 7.5A that controls the Body ECU.) Do you still get the door ajar light on the intrument cluster?
You will definitely need to dismantle the trim to get back into the dash and see if you pinched a wire.
Do you have the wiring diagrams? If not, search for an old thread on here from user GoodTimes that posted a link to the wiring. Or I can try and attach the appropriate one's from an '04 (should be similar.)

Thanks Kmvreter for the info. The fuse is a red 10 amp that is named dome, this is the name that is labeled on the fuse cover under the hood.

I just took apart everything that I did on Sunday and double checked all the connections, and then checked every thing again, looking over every wire and plug. So I carefully put everything back to where it should be and when I went to put another 10amp fuse into the 'dome' slot under the hood, it blow that very second.

I'm lost as to what the problem could be here. I just got this car last Tuesday, so I dont know if it's something I did on sunday, or if there was a problem starting before I bought it and it's just all coincidence that it all decided to happen a day and a half after I installed the FM modular for my XM radio or not.

Here's the wiring diagram for the dome/illumination circuit.
Something is shorting to ground. Find the wires and pin them out.
A multimeter checking for continuity to ground is your best friend right now. There is a wire close to what you are working on that illuminates the ignition key area. Maybe it is that one. You should see any burn spots/arc marks.

Hey Kmvreter, just wanted to give you an update. After spending all day yesterday and not finding a problem, I called a Toyota dealer (not the one I bought the truck from) and just got back. It took them a while but they found the problem. The problem was a broken wire going to the rear cargo lights, they said someone in the past has taken the linner down and damaged the wires in the process. So it turns out that my electrical issues had nothing at all to do with my installing my XM radio, Thank God!!

ps. Did they cut you a break and slide it under warranty or did you take the $ hit?

Thankfully it was covered under the factory warranty. And yes, it did take them a long time to find that to be the problem, I was going out of my mind sitting around doing nothing all afternoon long. : (

Hello! I was replacing my LED Lights I got every single one done and they were working until I did my Passenger Side Overhead Light and all of the interior lights suddenly stopped working. Any ideas

You likely shorted out the circuit and blew the fuse. Some led kits say they will draw more current than the incandescent, so that may have blown it too. I have had no problems with the ones I bought on Amazon called iBrightstar... except their kit isn't quite right...but they will fix it after the fact.

Also, if you have lighted visor mirrors, the little wires like to short together...may need to exercise them, or remove them temporarily to make sure that's not the problem.
