Fuse tap help... Please!

I am wiring the painless aux box 70207...
Everything is ran but I need to tap into a fuse inside the truck... the box is 4 constant and 3 are "key powered"... The tap that came with it didn't fit our mini fuses...

Please help...

Which fuse to I tap for Key power? Does it matter ?

And on top of this fuse tap there are 2 slots to add 2 fuses? So do I add a fuse in there equal to where I tap it from? Example If I pull out a 30 then I put two 15 in the top of the tap?


Been under the car forever with the multimeter trying to figure this out... Me and my lower back would appreciate any help, suggestions, advice (((or a lortab would be great too!)))

First of all read the minitap instructions carefully. If you install them the wrong way you basically bypass the fuses and run a direct line.

Secondly, P-Outlet is an ignition only source.

You are not supposed to exceed 10a with the minitaps, but I have run 15a fuses with no issues. Depends on what you are powering, how long the wiring runs are, all that stuff...

I Didn't see much on the directions on the back of the box...(not that it would make a lot of sense to me...)
I was just confused cause the painless harness came with a tap that is pretty much a metal clip that connects to a wire then gets stuck between a fuse... But it didn't fit the mini low profile fuses...

So this tap has two slots on top which throw a wrench in my plans cause I have no clue what fuse to add since it is going to the box to power 3 future accessories...

(((I know I know I should have gone with the blue sea box... Then I could have followed your write-up instead of going loan wolf mod'er over here)))

You don't get the fuse tap!

One fuse is replacing the factory fuse, the other is protecting the "new" circuit. The directions on the back tell you EXACTLY how to install it (the part about putting 1 fuse in and checking for power, etc.)

What are you using it for? I would only use a tap for low amp applications!

Hey Vegas, I made a quick photo to hopefully clarify how the fuse tap works, it's a real simple concept once you visualize it.

Basically the red line is the original path for the power of whatever fuse you are tapping into, and the yellow line is the path you are shooting for to protect the newly added accessory. So do you see how if you happened to insert the tap in the wrong way it won't be pulling the power correctly?

If you follow the direction on the back of the packaging I think you can figure it out from there. Make sure to only have the accessory fuse in the tap when trying out which orientation to plug in the tap (with both fuses in there it's going to work no matter what since it's effectively one solid wire all throughout )

So not sure what fuse to add or if I should just make u shape to hot wire it so it doesn't need a fuse ? Cause if I put a fuse in it while it interfere with the 3 fuses it is heading to?

It's actually my fault I couldn't figure out how to attach tap to the mini fuses so I kept cutting it to fit and gave up and now I am dealing with a tap the needs a fuse... When all I had to do was attach it to a mini fuse that wasn't low profile... Too late I messed up this thing

First off don't feel bad, at least you only messed up on a cheap little tap that can easily be replaced. Messing up electrically can be a lot more costly

So if I am understanding your wiring diagram correctly, you are trying to attach a fuse block by way of the fuse tap?

Sooo, I think what you are showing is that the ignition tap will be used to power a relay to switch power from the battery which is fine.

STILL FUSE THE TAP. Fuses are your friend Vegas. Write that 100 times and mail it to me...

Sorry I read that posted diagram wrong, like Antman said, if you are trying to hook the wire coming out of the fuse tap to the #3 (PINK ignition relay activation) wire, then yes it should be fine. And yes please do fuse the link for the ignition activation wire, better safe than sorry!

Thanks for the diagram... Wish the wish tap came with one of those...

So it's for an aux fuse box... It's already is ground where it is mounted and has a constant power to the battery... So all that is left is to tap into the key on power.... Not sure if it activates the relay or supplies powers for the 3 accessories that are not constant... That's way over my head just didnt wanna burn anything is so thought I would consult my life line... Thanks for the help.

Did that kit come with the circuit breaker shown on the diagram for the red wire to the battery?

If not you need to add one (I would use a fuse instead though but either way is fine) because that is what's powering EVERYTHING that is connected to that fuse box.

I think I need to make a small road trip with a few beers Antman. I have a bunch of electrical stuff I've recently installed and while it all "works" I am slightly worried about the safety of all of it. It looks like a birds nest with shitty grounding - its pretty embarrassing. Maybe one day I'll acquire a skill you don't have that I can help you with...I don't anticipate that day coming any time soon!

Sure. Take a fuse out of the fusebox. The pins that the fuse plug into are now visible. One side supplies power (source) the other side sends power to something(feed).

If you plug the tap into the fusebox and the source side happens to be the side of the minitap that has the output wire, you effectively bypass the fuse. Power needs to travel through the fuse to the output wire in the tap.
