Gas gauge flaking out

Probably unrelated but ever since The day by changed my starter every once in a while when I start the truck the gas light is on and tank reads empty. Wondering if there’s something electrical I can check or if it’s inside the tank?

I have the same issue on my '01 and chalk it up to a worn gas tank sender - it's been giving me fuel level readings for 21+ years and 516,000 miles. :)
I have a new Toyota sender on the bench waiting for the needed burst of enthusiasm to drop the tank.

BTW, the issue typically presents if I park on an angle. When I drive off, the gauge will eventually show the correct level. But if I drive off, find a level area, and turn the truck off, the gauge will read correctly the second I restart the truck.

lol my gas gauge has never been accurate, however my light rarely comes on at the wrong times. Happened on my 97 and does it on my current 96 as well.

I just reset my trip meter at every fill up, I know i can get roughly 200ish miles before I should fill up, usually puts about 13 gallons in the rig.

older Toyota's and especially 4Runners are notorious for this problem from what I've heard.

Idk. All mine so far work correctly and I have 5 4td gens.. Granted I don't drive my 01 any to see how accurate it is. I seems to read correctly though
