Gas gauge woes...

My 2013 4Runner trail edition, 135k mileage Just started to show around a quarter of a tank on the gas gauge, but runs out.

I have read other posts where people talk about a bad ground on the sender (can access it under the rear seat)... But in that case, it seems like their gas gauge just doesn't work. Mine works, but does not display the proper level.

Anyone experiencing the same problem - or have advice on how to correct it?

Drop'the tank and replace the fuel gauge sensor. part # 8332060620

That seems like a pretty drastic measure at this point... Is this a common problem... Do you know this from experience?

My wife had a 2011 SR5 a few years ago that had that problem. I ran out of gas twice with it. We ended up trading it in (not because of that) but at the time I read somewhere that there was an issue with the fuel sending unit.

I’ve seen it in other vehicles I’ve owned or worked out of. You’ll need to replace the sending unit in the tank as suggested above. In the mean time, reset your trip meter when you fill up and get fuel when you’ve gone 300 miles or so.

Its definitely a possibility that this is your problem although not guaranteed of course. I replaced mine last fall, it was a relatively easy job if you've got a spot to work, some basic hand tools and some patience. I was quoted a max of 4hrs labour by Toyota to change mine, so did it myself on my garage floor.

If you're interested, I have the fuel gauge troubleshooting procedure saved from TIS, it shows some tests you can do with a multimeter to check the circuit without dropping the tank. Or you can shoot in the dark and buy a sending unit and replace it. Some of the more advanced tests require Toyota dealer tools.

My 2011 has the same issue, I just make sure to fill up at 300 miles on my trip meter. I also have a 4 gallon rotopax on the roof because I’ve ran out of fuel a handful of times now.
