Gas Guage messing up

Whats up fella's,

A month ago I brought my 98 limited 4wd into sears to get a patch in my tire. I looked out there in the shop and saw my truck at a really weird angle on the lift so I walked out there and looked under and saw that the retard had jacked up my 4runner with one jack on my gas tank. The skid plate was all crushed in and the tank was dented. They claimed to have popped the dent out of the tank and straightened the skid plate.

Here's the question, my gas gauge is now acting weird. Now when i fill it up the gauge never reads all the way full. It stays in between 3/4 and full. After I fill it up, i might only go 6 miles and the gauge will drop dramatically. Maybe to just under 3/4 tank. I still get like 275 miles before my gas light comes on, but I just wanted to know if anyone else's gauge does this and if it was definitely the shops fault that caused mine to do this.

Thanks for any light you all can help shed on this situation.

By the way, the runner is at sears right now, and they are claiming that there is no way that what they did will cause my gauge to act up.

I would have an independent shop take a lot at it and have them survey the damages caused by it.

I am going to assume you will need to replace the fuel tank and its skid plate, thats just my thought.

I was hoping that the shop who damaged it would take care of the issue.

How much damage could be done in there? After they took out the dent, there did not appear to be any damage to the tank.

Does anyone know how the floats sit in the tank and what the chances are that something inside the tank is damaged?

Not positive but I doubt that would mess with your gauge but you never know . Maybe it pushed up when they jacked it up and pinched the wires on the top of the tank ?

I would not settle unless the dents look perfect ( which I don't think they can do) make them buy you a new tank and skid plate and have them check the wiring . Don't leave unless it looks perfect !

not that this helps..i know i overfill my tank..but my gauge will sit on the FULL hash mark until i hit about 110 miles..then i go another 40 miles and it drops all the way to almost the HALF hash mark. the gauge normally seems to accelerate as your tank empties..not a constant drain at all.

The deal is that the thing worked absolutely perfect before the incident and now it is broken. That means it's their fault or a crazy coincidence
