Gas guage???

Does anyone else's gas guage drop quickly after a fillup? Im still getting used to this 4runner, but ive noticed my guage drops to 3/4s after 40 miles of driving. That seems awfly odd to me!

I hand calculated my first tank and figured i got 15.9 which is dissappointing to say the least. I can almost get that out of my Dodge Ram Crew Cab which is a pig! Time to check the plugs and maybe chnage the fuel filter i guess??

Anyone on the guage though? Is that normal??

Yes normal. Mine does the same. The gauge is more a rough estimate to me. I used the trip counter instead.

The gauge is known to be inaccurate on these things. Gas mileage is all over the board though. I only get about 15.3 and I'm stock. Others say they're getting over 20. Absolutely all my maintenance is up to date too and I really don't drive it hard at all. I have no idea why there is such a wide range with the MPG's on these things.

I get around 18.5 mpg, much to PBR's dismay. As I said before, I don't drive very calmly.

I was getting about 13.8 and then after seafoaming I get just over 15. Sometimes it stays high, other times it drops quickly. I just figure around 200 or so miles per tank and I'm good.

I been getting a little over 300 miles on my last few tanks with a mix of highway/city driving. But this time around, I'm at a quarter left and I only have about 240 miles on my trip counter. I doubt I will make it to 300 with this tank. Getting high teens for mpg's is better than I expected though.

With my gauge, it tends to drop slower when its full and when it gets under half it drops super fast. Especially yesterday when I went up into the city (Los Angeles) where there is way more stop and go traffic.

I average around 230-240 miles a tank when the light comes on, this is 50% city 50% highway.

My gauge only reads correctly when the AC is on. Go figure.

That's what mine does. I average 17 combined with 31's

the readers in the tanks are bad. and the part is discontinued.... and to get it fixed its $400 because everything from the tank to the dash is replaced, or salvage one. i read mine as 220 miles is cutting it very close.

Mine did the same, until i drove it NEARLY completely empty. My light would come on around 200 miles trip and I could drive 80+ miles with the light on. Ever since then my gauge seems to be a lil more accurate.

I was wondering the same thing when I got mine last month. 1st tank only got 225 or so miles before the light came on and I averaged 15.9 mpg. However I only filled it with 14.7 gallons after that. The manual claims 18.5 gallon tank. So the next tank the light came on around 230ish and I decided to push it more. I went to 265 miles and still only put in ~15.5 gallons. This time I got 16.7 mpg but I did change the oil and put more air in the tires.

So I take it the light comes on way to early and I can safely go another ~40 miles after it does, I'm sure I could push it to another 60 or so miles after the light, but don't want to risk it.

This was all probably a 60/40 split of city/highway driving.

Yup

Best bet is investing in a scan gauge like the ultragauge. It takes some setting up and such but its far more accurate.

Mine doesn't drop that fast from full. After 40-50 miles, it's still closer to full than 3/4. My light comes in consistently at about 250, but when I fill up close to 300 I only put about 15-15.5 in it. I average right at 19mpg in mixed driving, although I can get 20 on a road trip. Not sure why, but I think my stickers have something to do with it. Also, I've driven it pretty much the same way for 11+ years, so the computer is used to me. The one thing that kills my mileage, other than driving too fast on the interstate, is wind.
