V6: 2166/17 = 127.413 gallons * 2.50 = 318.53

Difference of $19.91. How do you get $75?

You should also figure out the insurance difference. The V6 and V8 might not be the same.


The V8 will need a timing belt done at 90k.

The V6 will need spark plugs every 30k I think?

Oil changes will run the same.

The full-time 4WD may wear tires a bit faster. Your driving habits will affect tire wear more.

Brakes cost the same. The V8 is a bit heavier. Again, your driving habits will influence the brakes the most.

OK I do ALOT of CITY driving. What can I expect in reality from the people who own v6's and v8's ??
( I put on 25-26k per year about 85% CITY driving )

I still can't decide on if a v6 or v8 would be best for my situation. I like to off road but nothing real hard core and I do plan on stepping up to a 265/70/17 tire in either a Revo or BFG AT.

How accurate is the window sticker mpg ??If the sticker mpg is correct and city milage is only 1 mpg different for city driving and I drive 2166 mile's per month @$2.50 per gallon and the cost of the V8 engine it will cost me an add'l $75.45 per month over a 3 year period to drive the v8. I figured that because I rotate my vehicles every 3 year's due to the mile's I put on. As of this moment my company pay's for all my gas , BUT this nice perk can't go an much longer due to the rising fuel cost's ( to bad , it's a nice perk to have) and let's face it fuel will not get any cheaper in the future. Especially when it start's to come outy of my own pocket.

I average 17 "all-purpose" miles per gallon with a lead foot. This is roughly 70 percent city 30 percent highway.

For some reason I don't think that number would be much higher with a V6 either.

My V8 gets 19-20 MPG highway and 16 MPG City.
With only 9K miles on my 4Runner, hopefully this might not be the highest MPG I can get.

I think your mileage stats are right on for the V8. I get just about the same on mine and with my V6 I bettered that by about 1 mpg /city and 1-2 mpg/highway. From everything I'm reading here, your mileage numbers are about the average and what to expect from the 4Runner. Overall I think those are pretty good figures given the 4Runner's mass, drivetrain, and high drag coefficient.

I am Very pleased with the mpg I get with my 4Runner especially considering it's size, weight, etc. Heck, even towing my enclosed car trailer (with car inside) my 4Runner normally gets 9-10 MPG. Worst MPG I ever got was towing up the mountains in Western Maryland at 7.24 MPG.

Maybe someday in the future Toyota will make a 4Runner V8 Hybrid. Wouldn't that be interesting!

My goodness........one could rent a big 18 wheeler tractor & trailer to tow your toys and get nearly 6 mpg on diesel. Big rigs normally get 5-7 mpg tugging along 25k-45k in the trailer.
I wouldn't brag too much about that 9-10 mpg pulling about 7k-9k of car and trailer! Just my 1/2 cent opinion!
