Gas Mileage dropped like a rock

I get about 12mpg driving nice, whole tank

what is everyone doing to get such horrible gas mileage? I get 18 city and 24 hwy and since most of my driving is pretty mixed I usually average about 20 per tank. And I'm using math to figure this out not an electronic mileage estimater.

what size is our tanks? I had always been led to believe there is a difference in size of gas tank for 5vz versus 3rz... is this true?

the owners manual for my 99 lists it as "15.3 imp. gal"... what? I think I might be stupid

I've never heard that they were different. I always thought they were 18.5 gallon tanks.

This is the first time I've ever decided to go on my tank til the light came on.

sadly, this is the best mileage i've EVER gotten with my 4Runner.

Filled the tank all the way and it was only 14 gal... so mine seems to be about 4 gallons off if indeed i do have an 18.5g tank.

Here's my readings for my last few fillups.

I noticed that this thread was started with mods to the intake and fuel additives in hopes of achieving better fuel mileage. One thing to remember is that when more air is introduced to the engine more fuel must be added to the mixture. This is called stoichiometric ratio. I don't know if thats spelled right. But this also makes me wonder why anyone would use K&N intakes, unless your looking for horsepower. These filters don't filter as well as a regular OEM filter shortening the life of your motor. Thats more the question; more horsepower or better fuel economy? One post I would agree with is proper inflation of your tires. Though I wouldn't say nitrogen is necessary.

hey starr, do you have a 4WD or 2WD? that might account for the better gas mileage. clemson, i've heard alot of good things about amsoil, a few people ive spoken to have done an entire fluid swap to amsoil and claimed to get better mileage, im thinking of doing the swap and posting the results after running several tank-fuls before and after the swap.

agreed with 4xFunner, nitrogen is pointless unless you are running a formula-1 car or nascar. plus it isnt free.

You must bear in mind that you did drive further than your previous tanks since you saw the light come on. Did you try to go so far as to get the stutters?

I've been mad at this situation for a while, so any insight would be great.

Hmm... well I haven't had any stuttering. I will note that I have 4 extra gallons next time I get the light... maybe try to go 300 miles on my tank. I hit 240 last time... if I do get stutters, I'm not taking chances and going to the gas station.

I'll let you know, but so far I've barely gone 30 miles on my latest fill.



UPDATE: All 4Runners do have an 18.5 gallon tank. I found that out today.

UPDATE: All 4Runners do have an 18.5 gallon tank. I found that out today.

I carry 2 gallons of gas with me, for that reason. I can never seem to "run out" of gas at a "convenient" time... hahah. I'm usually about to cross a 5 mile long bridge or something like that.

Really? I have a 98 2wd limited getting 300 miles before the light comes on. 18.5 gallon tank which comes out to 16.2mpg. That's not including the gas left after the light. I think I can get 320-330miles with a full tank.

Yep. I've never gone over 270. I've also never done all highway either.

I'm not super concerned anymore. 32" aggressive and a roof rack don't help MPG. Ha.

I get a pretty steady 16 -17 mpg now, about 140-150 miles per half tank.

And this being after I got even bigger tires and stuff, too...

When I was breaking in the new differential, I grandma'd it and got 17.7 mpg (only city, no highway). I am yet to do a road trip, if I ever do, I wonder how mpg will be on highway.
