Gas Mileage for a 1991 4x4 V6???????

I have a 1991 V6 and I only get around 12 mpg. One time I got 13 mpg, but that was the best. it takes me 44 miles from a full tank to get to 3/4 of a tank. This can't be right. I know I am running a little rich, but dang, not that much. What is the average for these years. I am kind of new to toyota's and would appreciate your input.

Also, If this mpg is accurate, then would putting a V8 in it get better gas mileage. My neighbor has 2 old V8 Continental's and he averages 20 mpg. let me know. Thanks.

seriously you guys! why don't you respond. I know somebody has to know what the gas mileage is for a 1991 4runner!!!!!
 
Well I'm not very technologically knowledgeable but I have an identical truck and I get about 15-16mpg city. I just got the truck and haven't taken it on a long road trip so I don't know what the freeway milage might be. I suspect you could be running richer than you think. When was the last time you had it smogged? It could also be a computer issue. If you dont feel comfortable figuring it out yourself, a local shop should be able to diagnose the problem pretty easy. The problem with our year trucks is they dont have built in computer diagnostics. IE, when they plug in your car to an external computer it cant point specifically to what's going wrong.
 
Just for comparison sake I owned a 1990 V6 4x4 automatic and it was horrible on gas....I had the engine completely rebuilt at around 250000KM by a friend who is a professional mechanic and the gas mileage still sucked after it was done....he had it set up perfect to factory specs....I remember only getting on average 250-275 KM (150-170miles) to the tank.....needless to say I sold it because of that about twelve years ago....
 
diddo to that, im getting about 300km per tank, approx 13 mpg. Im not sure if its just old age (360,000kms) or a sensor problem, but im too busy fixing other problems to dig into it.
 
If I stay under 65mph on the highway i have gotten
19-21mph but around town 14mph. if i go over 65 it drops like a rock!
 
Well, this really sucks! What do you guys think about me putting in a V8 and getting better gas mileage....a small block
 
mine is a 92 4Runner v6 with 228k on her. I get roughly around 14-16 mpg.

Make sure get your injectors cleaned, PCV valve replaced.

The time I noticed a big difference on my MPG is when I used SeaFoam in my engine 1/3 in my gas tank, 1/3, in crankcase, and 1/3 right into the engine via vacuum tube.

That after that. I drove for about 500 miles then did an oil change.. ever since then I have gotten between 14-16 mpg. better than 11-13mpg.
 
Interesting thread.....opposite from what I'm seeing with my 94 auto.

So, I went from a 4L XJ to the Toy. Both had about the same sized tanks (65L?). The XJ averaged 350 in town and almost 600 highway (assuming no gear and just me).
The Toy: 460Km's to a tank in town! WOW! Haven't done a road trip as of yet, looking forward to it.
T4R has 280K on it.

Edit: by my math, it works out to 17 mpg.

My 90 with a V-6 gets 19 1/2 on the highway and less in the city. I keep it tuned up and recently had new injector parts installed. If you're getting really crummy mileage I would suspect the fuel injection system.
 
I have a 94 with AT. Everything I read online - edmunds, kelley bb, carsurvey.org, consumer guide automotive - gave me the idea that 13-15 was average for city, and a little better for highway.<br><br>I tested mine when I got it and it's right in the middle of that.<br><br>I had an 89 for 9 years (see below) however and got about 16-18 city/18-21 highway. But it was less when I got it (and less when I sold it @ 250k). I had a Motorvac done after a year or so and it really improved the mileage by 2 mpg - just like they brag about. I also use a K&N filter, and BG44 on occasion.<br><br>Forgot to add that the 89 is a manual trans, which might make a difference too
 
I drove 270'ish Miles on an almost full tank, mostly highway, and mines a 3.0L V6, 94 4runner.

Not sure how big the tank is, I just put 62 litres in it so I am assuming 65 litres. Not sure how you work out gallons over here, Im a KM / L type of guy.

Is it 3.8 Litres per Gallon???

65/3.8 = 17 Gallon Tank?

So whats that 270/17 = ~16 mpg

Thats in a manual as well.
 
Fuel Mileage

I am getting up to 550km on a full tank. Mainly highway, not much city.
I drive it lightly in mainly the 4th gear without much hard acceleration.

I use regular gas but put in a lucas fuel additive every tank.
A tank costs me about 65$ nowadays.

I am much happier with this as my Nissan Skyline gets about 300kms to a tank and only takes 92-94 octane, and costs about $90 to fill up.

My 94 auto 4X4 averages 14mpg, I have 3000 mi on a rebuilt engine. I live in the mountains and work in the valley. So it is mixed highway and mountain driving.
 
I have the original window sticker for my 92 4runner and the EPA advertised mileage is 14 city and 17 highway.
 
That's really interesting about your original sticker mileage. I can swear on bibles that my 90 gets 19 highway. And actually 19.5. I did a lot of driving between Phoenix and Boulder. With gas at around $4.25 I was paying serious attention!
 
My '93 standard tranny v-6 averages about 14 MPG. I've had it for 3 years now. I was getting about 12, but repaired a couple of things and it boosted to 14. course now it wont even start, so.....
 
Geuss its time to revive this old thread. Mine is a 94 V6 manual trans. When I first got it it was about 15 or so. About 230miles to a tank. After the 33's it was still the same. Speedometer didnt even change when driving. Go through the radar signs and it matches what I am doing and the same on my GPS. Changed out the muffler and knocked out the cat and it went up a little. This was when the timing was way out. Last time I checked it was getting 12-13mpg/s approx 200 miles to the tank and I have changed nothing. Now I have put put on my homemade intake and keep the stock filter I am waiting to see what I am getting per tank. Wondering what else is there to change or check other than what I have. New timing belt was installed, plugs. About to do plug wires. Something has got to get better cause I like driving it too much.
