gas mileage go-to fixes

ok so for the last few weeks I've been comparing ECT on and off.

Off I've averaged 16, On I've averaged 17.2-17.5. Sounds like ECT on is a winner even if it's by a little bit.

I'd add that replacing oil in the diffs/txfer case helps with MPG. I always put in Redline / AMSOil 75-90. After replacing the oil, it seems to ride smoother on the freeway.

Freeway I get 20, city it gets around 15-16. Usually making small, infrequent trips kills the MPG because it tries to warm up the engine by increasing the fuel given to the engine.

yes I did the transfer case front and rear diff fluids about a month ago. I need to do oil, just been slacking on that.

I get about 15 mpg usually average 240ish a tank.

Mine is religiously maintained with everything being done on it's interval. That being said that was nearly 8k miles ago. Run synthetics in everything.

Now my commute maybe the killer here. Not much in stop and go but I drive about 5 miles 1 way to work. I do let it get to operating Temp most of the time before I take off. Never really in it much at all. Tire PSI is spot on and I travel mostly on flat roads. No hills to climb etc.

Everything has been done to insure MPG's with mine and I can't break 15 mpg to save my life. Now I didn't buy it to be a fuel saver but my ISF gets better MPG's then my 4R and I give it hell sometimes. Not to mention my AWD GX on larger tires gets better mpg.

Think it's time for me to move to a LC or LX for the same MPG's lol!

Great thread. Lotta things to do - ECT test, tires and tire pressure, air filter, plugs/wires, oil, etc. I've got a set of Nexen 245s I will put on after the LTXs wear out.

My 16 mile commute is probably the culprit for mine too. Prolly just need to keep this vehicle for trips and such. Not a good city runner...

My 2000 seems only to take about 13 gallons even when on fumes. That amount of fuel returns and average of 255 miles, Most of my driving is highway. Truck is stock with stock tires.

Good thread - going to dig through previous service records and check the last gear oil change for the diffs.

Set a record this week - had to drive from Chicago to Davenport, IA and back on Monday. Made it 323.7 mi on a tank and pumped 17.195 gal in - a hair under 19 mpg. 152k and bone stock. Given that cruise control was on 80 the entire time and it was windy, I'll take it.

that doesn't seem right. 18.5 gallon is full right? I fill up roughly 16.2 to 16.7 when the gas light comes on. Maybe your fuel tank sensor is off.

you might need this

I have replaced everything on my 220k engine more or less. Clean maf, new o2 sensors (Denso), timing belt/wp, OEM plugs, NGK wires, throttle position sensor, inspected the cat (single cat system), cheap aftermarket free flowing muffler, 5-30 synthetic oil, Injen CAI. Wix fuel filter. Did some other minor stuff with the first cycle of synthetic oil as well, cleaning agent's, ect.

I have a 5-speed which gives me an edge with mileage in town I believe. I'm lifted 3 inches or a bit more on 285/75/16s. My wheels are light, 18 lbs each.

I ran it on a nice section of freeway at 65 mph this weekend for a little over 200 miles. Average hand calculated MPG was 21.6! I have only had ONE tank of gas over the last 9k miles that was under 17 average, and I went wheeling/snow playing that tank.

For someone fighting for MPG, outside the obvious replacement pieces. Make sure your brake's are adjusted right and not dragging. Good bearings. My $20 muffler improved 2 MPG average by itself. For most, doing all that I've personally done for a foundation on maintenance, isn't worth spending $1000 to get 3 mpg back let's say. Best cost to beneficiary mod bar none, for me was the muffler.

Lot's of people ask and inquire about "what makes MPG better". I'd spend ~$200 if that were my sole intention. Synthetic gear oil in diffs/t-case, Thrush welded muffler, clean sensors, Denso o2 sensors. Shop smart, buy online, don't overpay for a quick weld job on the muffler.

Hope that helps someone out.
