I have replaced everything on my 220k engine more or less. Clean maf, new o2 sensors (Denso), timing belt/wp, OEM plugs, NGK wires, throttle position sensor, inspected the cat (single cat system), cheap aftermarket free flowing muffler, 5-30 synthetic oil, Injen CAI. Wix fuel filter. Did some other minor stuff with the first cycle of synthetic oil as well, cleaning agent's, ect.
I have a 5-speed which gives me an edge with mileage in town I believe. I'm lifted 3 inches or a bit more on 285/75/16s. My wheels are light, 18 lbs each.
I ran it on a nice section of freeway at 65 mph this weekend for a little over 200 miles. Average hand calculated MPG was 21.6! I have only had ONE tank of gas over the last 9k miles that was under 17 average, and I went wheeling/snow playing that tank.
For someone fighting for MPG, outside the obvious replacement pieces. Make sure your brake's are adjusted right and not dragging. Good bearings. My $20 muffler improved 2 MPG average by itself. For most, doing all that I've personally done for a foundation on maintenance, isn't worth spending $1000 to get 3 mpg back let's say. Best cost to beneficiary mod bar none, for me was the muffler.
Lot's of people ask and inquire about "what makes MPG better". I'd spend ~$200 if that were my sole intention. Synthetic gear oil in diffs/t-case, Thrush welded muffler, clean sensors, Denso o2 sensors. Shop smart, buy online, don't overpay for a quick weld job on the muffler.
Hope that helps someone out.
