Gas mileage on 6's and 4's

hey guys and gals! just wondering what kind of gas mileage you all are getting these days?? especially for a 4 cyl, since ill prolly buy me one if these if gas prices keep going up My Nissan frontier extra cab 4 cyl. gets about 18MPG right now. Think the 4runner could top that?? Thanks for the help.

well i have a 99 ltd, and edmunds says it gets 17/20

for me, i have a broken o2 sensor and some other mech. issues that are getting fixed as we speak thank God, so i hope to see my mpg jump up significantly

since i'm already on edmunds.com i'll just post the mpgs for the various models for 99

4dr std 4wd wagon (18/21)*

Limited Styles:
4dr ltd wagon (17/21)
4dr ltd 4wd wagon (17/20)*

SR5 Styles:
4dr SR5 wagon (17/21)
4dr SR5 4wd wagon (17/20)*

*they offer both automatic and maunel, for the purpose of numbers I chose to display the automatic mpg

No, 18 mpg average is a fair number for a 4 cylinder 4Runner. I have a 2000 4wd 5 speed and year round 18 is pretty darn close.
It is usually around 20-22 in the warm months and 17-19 in the cold months. BTW Toyota lists the automatic as having better MPG than the standard and the 2wd 4 cylinder auto is the most frugal 4Runner you could get.

I have an 00' SR5 4x4 w/ the V6 and I get around 19 in mixed driving (50% hwy/50% traffic). I haven't taken it on a 100% hwy trip so I don't know how well it would do then...perhaps 21?

I have an 02 SE and I average 18 in mixed, but on a trip to DC and back this past week I got 21. Last summer, I drove from PA to the Outer Banks (400+ miles) on a single tank of gas. I think once I did the math it was around 24.something.

i have a 01 SE V6 too, but i get nothing close to 20 mpg. the best ive seen was 18.5 and that was back road driving @ 55-60 mph range. most optimal gas performance.

mixed city and highway 50/50, i see an average of 15-16 mpg.

i just had a 60K tuneup up too at the dealership.

i must have a bad 02 sensor no?

im sick of paying 2.50 a gallon here in california. its just insane.

I have 265/75s on mine and with a mix of highway and city I see 16-17 which is ok but I do need a tuneup but I'm not expecting much but even a consistent 17 all the time would be nice,maybe 260-270 a tank.

Just filled up this morning and averaged 19 for my most recent tank. It was mostly mixed driving (commute to and from work). I get pissed when I don't break 20.

just filled up for the 3rd time this week, and the past 2 tanks, the weather has really been great. so...no heat/defrost, mostly highway at 80-85mph, i have hit 21.5 and 21.8 mpg. like i said, this is the best weather we have had in months, and i am right at 21-22. i am thinking i could push 22-23 if i slowed down some. that is with the 4cyl, 5spd, with the 4.56 gearing. not too bad. or atleast not for a truck that is about to turn 125k tomorrow!

On highway trips, keeping under 75 mph, I average 22 mpg with my 3.4 liter V6. Still average 20 or higher when above 75.

These fuel prices really suck.....

I have 97' manual 4cyl 2.7L total base model and it ranges from 17/21. i've never seen higher and I've driven up north before....all the way. Hope it's not my truck...

I have a 1996 w/6 and a 5 spd and I finally figured out that if I keep it set at 68 mph I can get 22 mpg which I am happy with. I had a 90 4runner with the 3.0 and I hated not being able to accelerate in 5th gear unlike my 96.

ill tell you why i never trust people's numbers on stock 4runners.

i have a handheld gps/pda. on a trip on the highway in stock form, i noted that my speedometer consistently read higher than the gps in terms of my speed by at least 3 or 4 mph.

if i was doing 80 on my speedometer, the gps said i was doing 76. this means my trip meter was reading higher than i was actually doing.

when i upped to 265/75's from stock 265/70's, it was DEAD ON accurate, and my mpg math changed pretty dramatically (though i did lift at this time too so that variable alone could kill practical use of these numbers).

i consistently get about 15-16, but i used to get as high as 18.

im a leadfoot, so i can go as low as 13 if i was in a real hurry that tank :bash:

imo: the only thing stock readings of mpg's will do for you is tell if something is wrong when it fluctuates dramatically.

otherwise, youre best off using a gps or the like to get actual mileage.

Lee,you and i get almost the exact same figures depending on how we drive. Mostly I see 16 but I've been near that 13mpg mark too.

My mileage has been a little better lately due to some of the lead removed from my foot so for the last two tanks I've been averaging 16.5mpg. Might be a little better becuase I'm not compensating for my bigger tires.
