I bought a 2006 4runner 4WD for my son- and didn't really check into mileage-I figured it wasn't great especially with the 4WD so I decided to firgure it on his last tank he drove 268 miles and filled up with 19.53 gallons = 13.7MPG
is this about right? UGH!! Luckily he is in HS and doesn't drive much- he fills up 2x a month

I've gotten through a few tanks on my 04 V6 4x4 and gotten anywhere from 17.5- 21 mpg out of mine.

I have an 05 and get between 20 and 21 with 90% highway driving at 70mph. He is either driving like speed racer or driving mostly around town. If not, I'd recommend checking the front calipers. They are probably frozen up and may be hurting the mileage.

That's very surprising, I get a little better than that with my bigger, more aggressive tires & wind plow (roof rack). I got close to 20 when it was stock and before I bought it, my aunt was getting 22-23 in it (according to the computer MPG). 4wd shouldn't make that big of a difference.

I managed about 13 last summer pulling a very heavy trailer with a Harley to Colorado (that was hand calculated because I was driving on someone else's gas). It seems like you'd have to stay on the throttle all the time to get that low.

The caliper thing would be a good idea to have checked too. Has it had all the regularly scheduled maintenance? Oil, Air Filter, spark plugs, etc.?

If he's in high school, well, that pretty much explains it. Not necessarily because he might drive like a typical young HS male, but there might be a lot of slow going getting into and out of the parking lot both at the beginning and end of school. At our HS there're large traffic jams twice a day.

You might like to take it out some weekend for a day trip and then check the mileage. Keep in mind we are at that point in the year when refineries are changing over to the winter blend, and that almost guarantees a reduction in mpg.

thanks- we live in suburbs with alot fo hills and stopsigns and not alot of room for speeding. I'll get the calipers checked when i can have it for a day soon. It had the 60,000 service just recently...

Agree with 4RunnerFan. HS kid is probably not as gentle on the gas, but probably more due to a lot of short trips or no freeway mileage, as you mentioned filling up only 2x month - the vehicle ends up spending a lot of the time just warming up. Mine's a V8 and gets about 18.5mpg with 90% of the time on the freeway. I probably get close to 13-15mpg in the city.

I actually spent last week testing this. I've got 2.5/1 Daystar lift and a Rola basket on the roof. Was getting the feeling that the MPG's were low teens based on the number of trips to the gas station over the last couple of months.

Strictly using the computer and a total of 6 20-mile round trips (3 with AC and 3 without) the AC trips were getting 13-14 MPG's and the non-AC were getting 19.

I have 2006 4WD and and in city mix driving it gives me around 17.8mpg with 'heavy foot'. On Highway I get around 18.9mpg with 75+miles/hr speeds. The computer shows about 21.5mpg on average. I have 265/65 BFG long trails.

i got 21.2mpg in my 04 with 95K miles on it coming back from dallas in july. i bought it then. computer read 23.6mpg.

i drive for work and immediately noticed that i went from almost 380 miles per tank to getting 260 on average.

i recently put on 275/75 bfg at's. otherwise unmodded. and with an error calculation of 3% im still in the 14.7-15 mpg range. i take the highway as often as i can. and to add, my job is in my car, so i sit a good bit with it running. about an hour to hour and a half a day.

i feel that if i were to take another highway trip tho, that it would be good again. its a 4wd vehicle. its not s'pose to get great gas mileage. and its doing a ton better than my 2010 TT FJ did with a baja rack and 33" open country mt's on it........so im fairly happy.

I've had my 06 4wd v6 for about a month and have averaged 22mpg mixed driving. 25mpg Highway with the CC set at 65.


Of course my car in highschool averaged about 8mpg........

Been keeping track of our mpg's for the past year since we purchased it. 60%city/40% highway: 18-19 mpg avg with a/c off. 17-18 mpg with a/c on. Approx. 4-5 mpg less pulling a light to medium trailer. All highway driving is 19-20 mpg crusing 75-85 mph. If I drove slower I'm sure I would get better. Computer reads around 2 mpg higher than the above figures for whatever reason.
