Gas pump keeps shutting off

My 4Runner has been kind of piece lately... A few weeks ago I had a frustrating fill up where the pump keeps shutting off after filling for a few seconds. But it's been happening at different pumps at different brands in different cities. Any ideas what could be up with my truck? Based on some quick googling it's probably EVAP related but was curious if anybody here had similar problems.

I would say play with the nozzle a bit, sometimes you have to really press it against the fill hole to make it seal well. I assume its probably because the temperature is dropping and the rubber in those old nozzles isn't as pliable. Those vapor recovery nozzles here in California can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

Worst case scenario have someone with a TIS Techstream run an EVAP test and see if anything comes up.
 
Continuing to fill the tank after the pump automatically shuts off can send gasoline into the EVAP canister - if the setup on this truck is like any other recent vehicle I've seen. When that happens, there is no way for the tank to purge air the next time you fill up, and you'll get the constant shutting off because the tank keeps barfing gasoline back up the neck. You'll have to let the gas in the canister evaporate over time (hard this time of year) and then make it a habit to put the handle away as soon as it clicks off.

It doesn't do it at every gas station. And when I fill up an 1/8th of a gallon and my tanks on empty and it clicks off, I've still got to gas somehow.

X2! I know I shouldn't but I'll leave the ignition in the ON position so I know when its full. Clicking off every few seconds is just plain crazy. I find it better to hold the nozzle upward and it'll give you a good arms workout too.:jaw: LoL
 
Been having this problem for years at different pumps. lifting the pump so the tip points downwards works the best and doesn't require you to constantly hold the lever. I use to struggle with it holding it in different positions but this works best for me.
 
I can usually only set the pump speed on the lower notch. Otherwise it keep shutting off. I'll have to try tipping it up.
 
We don't pump our own gas ^_^. So when this happens I just sit back and let the fuel attendant mess around with it.

I've only ever experienced this right after my (now) regular gas station was just build and the nozzles / rubber were new.

There may be something to that. As bizarre as this is going to sound, the problem is consistent at Costco and Arco. And I'm talking Costcos and Arco 400mi apart. But I fill up at valero or chevron or something and it works fine.


And yeah, I saw this pic in another thread. I think this is the EVAP canister. I tried opening up the green valve and it looked great. I also took off the bottom hose and it looked good too. I saw on another youtube video where the guy recommended using some compressed air to blow that hose out because maybe a spider web or dirt got into it. So I may try that.

And I'm really surprised at how many of you guys are experiencing this problem.

It feels weird and I don't trust those guys when they pump my gas... definitely a weird thing you guys got going on in Oregon... >.>
 
For those interested, I got a cheap Obd 2 scanner on Amazon and zero codes popped on my truck today.
 
Yea my newish to me (since May 2014)2008 sr5 does this,I've noticed 90% of the time it does this at Safeway gas stations.i used to be a ford dealer tech and we would get similar concerns on a few models.so Im familiar with this through research and stuff.

On our 4runners I blame the combination of the gas pump and the steepish angle of the fuel filler neck.around 2008 all california pumps were mandated to vapor recovery systems,that's why they have that stupid boot.the pumps have a small orfice on the bottom to shut them off once full by fuel blocking the orfice and fuel flow past a Venturi creates a vacuum that pulls a diaphragm down shouts the pump off.at least that's my understanding of it.some pumps can be delicate with a smaller shut off threshold.

I think what's going on is the angle of the filler neck is alittle steep and sets off some of the delicate diaphragms.unless I hold it up,out,or clock it a little bit,but again I've noticed for us only at Safeway gas pumps.so we don't fill there unless we have to.also there's two types of pump nozzles,vst and Healy.ive noticed the safe way pumps tht click off are healy's.you may want to keep an eye on that for which pumps to avoid.

I've been thurow with mine,no codes,disconnected vent hose at vent valve,disconnected vapor inlet at charcoal can,then as close to tank as I could.no go still clicked off at suspect station.unless it's in the tank but then it would do it all the time.i think it's in the pump and filler neck design.just my thoughts.

Codes will not do you any good if your not getting a vent valve code,unable to vent code,or bleed up rate code.any issues in the evap system the evap monitor would pick it up,if it can pick up a bad gas cap it can pick up a vent issue!

Yeah I get ya. I actually prefer to pump my own gas, most of these half-wit gas attendants (sorry, no offense to anyone ... just being passive aggressive) have no motivation to do anything so it takes forever. When your pump clicks off and you sit there for 10 minutes waiting for someone to come take it out, and you finally get tired of waiting so you get out of your car to do it yourself only for them to say "You can't do that, we'll be there in a minute" - gets super annoying.

I fill up at Fred Meyer because it's about 1 minute from my house, and I get $0.50 off per gallon.
