Gas smell from 1990 4runner. Help please

Hi,

I just purchased a 1990 4runner, it's seems in great condition and runs really well apart from there is a gas smell on the outside of the car. Does anyone have any ideas on where it could be coming from and is it an easy fix?

Also I can't open the trunk, any help would be much appreciated.

Try to narrow down the location of the gas smell. And is it just after use, or all the time? I'd probably fire it up for a minute or 2, then crawl around underneath and sniff about. Powering it on should pressurize the gas lines, whereas if there was a leak in the lines there might not be pressure if you went sniffing later.

For the tailgate, if the window is down all the way and the door is unlocked, check the sensors for both of those things.

Unless somebody is pouring gas on your truck when you're not looking, I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say "somewhere in your fuel delivery system".

Sorry to be snarky, but there's no way anybody can possibly know where your gas is leaking from. There's not even any tricks we can share. You're going to have to put on your grungies and go find it. Once you find it, we can tell you how to fix it.

I just had a snoop around, it doesn't seem to be to gassy unless it's driving, there is no smell from engine bay. The exhaust is blowing before the box though, do you think that could be the smell? I did notice a slight smell of gas where the spare wheel is. I now this I vague and I appreciate the help.

As for the trunk there is no handle on the outside of the trunk but there is a key slot. When I turn the key there is a motor sound but nothing is happening. I have tripped the panels of the inside and found the cable that runs to either side of the trunk, I figured that when I pulled the cables it would realise the trunk but it does not? Is there a Manuel way of popping it open?

Matt,

Its likely the emissions, could be as simple as a vacuum line(s) mis-routed.

Under your hood normally is a diagram, but its a poor one IMO.

What model is your 1990, and which engine?

I would look at EGR, and the fuel regulator, at a guess. Is the CEL on?

As for your tailgate the window has to be rolled all the way down and then you use the handle on the inside of the tailgate. And it sounds like your motor might be disconnected. Good luck!
