Gas tank DIMENSIONS

Here's my question, and yes, I did search. All I found was the "capacity."

If some one can post up the height of the portion of the tank where the fuel pump goes, I would really appreciate it, or the length of the pump itself.

I'm debating between making a gas tank, or doing the F250 swap.

Problems with the F250 swap are the following:

1) Doesn't have the correct mounting for pump, evap, and filler(obviously....)
2) Doesn't have the right depth for Pump(obviously....)
3) Can't really be modified if it's below the frame rails unless you beat it, thus causing loss of capacity, however minimal it might be.
4) Still the same 18 Gal as stock tank.


Pros of F250 swap:

1) Tanks already made
2) People have done the mod

Sure there's more, but I've been up for 24 hrs straight, so my brains not working right at the moment.

Problems with building the tank myself:

1) Never built a tank before, though I think I can handle it. Pretty decent at fabrication....
2) Cost of Steel to make the tank,
3) Mounting of the necessary equipment to provide fuel.


Pro's:
1) Make the tank how I want to
2) Increase fuel capacity, thus increasing range, but costing more to fill up....
3) The feeling of fabricating this thing myself.

At this point, I'm leaning more toward making a tank out of some 18ga steel, and putting a skid plate under it for protection.

But, as stated above, I don't know how deep the pump goes into the tank. I know that the tank has a hump where the pump sits, but how much higher it is than the rest of the tank, I have no clue.

i would rather ditch the factory gas tank and its location (make room for better link system and eliminate any clearance issue with the drive line) and fab a new tank to put in where the spare sits.


edit: NVM just saw you have 63s in the back lol but still a good idea non the less

I definately plan on ditching the stock tank. I've already got the BudBuilt clocking ring, and a custom transmission crossmember, but the damn gas tank and the gas tank mount are the only thing that's keeping it from being a complete flat belly and fully armored. I have the damn belly pan sitting at the house, but can't add it because of the freaking tank!

That's why I was asking for the DIMENSIONS of the stock tank. I know the pump isn't going to fit in the F250 tank, so I wanted to see if I could fab something where I could just cut the pump, evap, and filler mounts off the old tank I have, and weld them into the new tank I'm going to build.


I know that sounds bad. Yes I have another tank at the house, but that's 300 miles away. I won't be back home till Friday, but I want to see if I can at least get some metal cut from here on base.

I would, but my truck is an hour north at MCAS Cherry Point. Friend needed to move some stuff so I let her borrow it.....
 
I have a tank sitting in my yard. I'll get your measurements as soon as I can get outside and back in.

Edit*** I got 11½ inches from the mounting flange of the fuel pump assembly to the bottom of the tank. I had to eyeball it since the pump was still attached.

If you need a more precise measurement then I can get it later.

I've read that time and time again. After reading this the first time, I decided to make my tank. I want more capacity for longer trips and more fun. :)


I would use the fuel pump and hanger assemble from the F250 tank. Graft the 4runner fuel level sender the ford sender. Why reinvent the wheel if ford has already done it.

The Ford pump is a completly different set up than the 4Runner. The Ford system runs off a different Ohm, and the level works differently than our 4Runners do. The guage wouldn't work correctly if I used the Ford parts with the 4Runner wiring.

Plus, the stock 18gal is a little old, considering I have to spend about $200+ to get home and back on a weekend. I'd much rather have a little bigger tank, and spend a little more money to fill it up once than have to sit there and watch the tank get lower and lower, wondering if I'll be able to make it home before I have to stop.

YOU sir, are a lifesaver. When you say fuel mounting flange, you mean flange on the tank, correct? Where the pump gets bolted to the tank?

The pump sticks out what, about 1.5" from the top of the tank, as well as the evap line? So that would put the total height to ~13", correct?
 
So you want a bigger capacity tank but want to push the bottom of the tank up to get a flat belly. Kinda a tall order, more fuel in less space.

The ford tank is about 18 gallons so other than loosing the stock tank, you aren't gaining capacity.

Get one of my gas tank skidplates and just drag it over obstacles.
 
Glen as toyed with the thought of building a tank that is shoved up higher (because he has a 1.5" body lift). He would gain a flat belly but would lose some capacity.

Building a tank with square corners will increase capacity a little.

I meant the flange on the sending unit. Yeah so total height is probably around 13-14 inches. If you're still interested in more accurate measurements then I might have time to get them tomorrow by removing the sending unit.

Whats your plan to get more capacity? I'm in the same boat as you, I'd much rather not have to fill up mid way to and from Lejeune when traveling home. Though, my route will be to put the tank where the spare sits. Maybe I can convince you to help me with that after you get yours settled. There'd be a 6-pack in it for ya :D

Here is why I know this will work. I don't have a pan hard bar, nor do I have a spare tire mount in the back. All the supports are getting cut out once I do this tank. They were going to have to get removed anyway once I did the F250 swap.

The tank will go from the spare tire location, to a distance undetermined. I know I can get it almost to the axle, and not have to worry about all the stuff from hitting the tank. I also don't have to worry about the PanHard Bar that hitting the tank.

Like I said, my set up is a little different from other 4Runners, so I know I can make it work out.

I too have a 1.5" BL, thinking about increasing it to a 2". If I can get the right amount of space between the body and the bottom of the frame, I'll be all set with this plan.

I thought about changing mine to a five gallon tank, that way I could afford to fill it up.

Har Har. That wouldn't help me too much driving 600+ miles everyweekend to get home and spend time with my son. Not to mention, you get out on the trail, you're screwed, unless you have 5 Jerry cans...

If you can get me the measurements of the pump, and the total height of the tank, to the highest point, including the sending unit or the pump, which ever is highest, I would greatly appreciate it. My problem right now is trying to figure out how tall the total tank is, and make sure I have space for the fuel pump in the tank, as well as the clearance I need for the tank itself.
 
OK. Doing some rough measurements, I came up with these figures.

23.5 long x 35 wide x 7 high

That would give me approx 24 gal. I know I can get at least 25, I just need to make sure everything is right under there. I'll update tonight when I get done with some more accurate measurements.

And I plan on making one this weekend at the latest out of foam board.

As of right now, I can get away with a 24"x30"x7" tank. Convert that to feet and you get 2'x3'x0.583', which gives you a cubic footage of 3.498 ft3. Multiply that by 7.48, the ammount of gallons in one cubic foot, and you get 26.16504 gal.

I might make it deeper in the front and angle up in the back, to keep a good departure angle. I know that the likelyhood of something getting past the axle and hitting the tank is fairly small, so I might just make it go to about 2" above the axle while it's at full stuff, though these 63's aren't very "stuffy" when it's both of them trying to stuff at the same time. I'll probably just get back up on that ramp, and see where each side goes to again, and go from there. That should give me a good idea of where the tank can sit in the front.

Either that, or I might just make it deeper all together. I think I can get away with making it half way down the shackle hangers in the back, if not further than that. But that will kill my departure angle.

Decisions, decisions......:ybrick:

I'm also making the front support double as a place to mount my shocks. I'm going to have them angling in and slightly back, so it'll be /\, and also slightly to the rear. There will be studs that will be sleeved and welded to the crossmember, from the back to the front, with the heads cut off the back to keep it flush.

I'll come up with a couple drawings today and post 'em up to see what you guys think of them.
 
I'll go out and get those measurements for you now assuming you still need them. Were you still going to use the OEM sending unit assembly?
 
I would greatly appreciate them.

I plan on using ALL the OEM I can. The sending unit, evap lines, the whole 9. That way, all I really have to do is just extend the electrical lines, and not try to figure out what goes where and all that jazz.

I have a scrap tank at the house, and I plan on cutting the fittings off of it and using them on my tank. so all I have to do it bolt all the stuff back on.

If you could get the measurements of the fuel pump, just how long it is, and how far it sticks above the tank, and how far the evap lines stick above the tank I would greatly appreciate it.
