gas tank info

ok so my car is a 2000 sr5, i ran my vin and asked on here and i guess i do have an 18.5 gallon tank, but i am not seeing it....when my gas gauge goes to empty, and the fuel light comes on i figure 2 gallons reserve right? but i usually get there at about 200-250 miles,according to the 18.5 tank i should be getting 300 miles + on a full tank right?so when the gas light comes on, how many gallons are really in there? anybody know the specs?

The light probably comes on with about 6 gallons left. But not all that is usable gas. Even if you run your tank out till your truck dies it doesn't necessarily mean there isn't any gas in there. It's just not usable gas. If it helps any, my light would come on and I would usually get gas first chance I got. It would almost always fill up to about 12-13 gallons.

yeah thats where i am at, right as my light comes on i rush to get gas,im trying to figure out how far i can go past the fuel light.....just for emergency purposes.....hell im to parinoid to drive around with any kind of maintinence light...
 
I have a 4th gen so it may be different, but I used to have a 3rd.

In my 4th when the light comes on I have around 3 gallons left. Usually go about 30 miles before I get gas (hardly ever fill up) and I never run out.

If I remember correctly (when I ha my 3rd gen) I went about 65 miles and the engine died, wouldn't start. I think I have about 16-17 mpg with it. You do the math because I don't like math lol.

yea, lol i did the math and yea it is about 6 gallons left after the light comes on....but that just sounds so off for toyota to do, i could understand like 3-4 gallons max reserve but 6 gallons is a huge reserve.....
 
Your pump can't access at that extra 6 gallons.

Technically, there is about 2 gal in there at all times that you can't access.

So you do have an about 4 gal reserve.

wtf you serious? toyota just lost a point in my book..... i am almost at a point in carrying a 5 gallon tank of gas and testing it.....but i just dont have the time to do that...lol
 
Not all 4Runners have that issue though, I went 60 miles with my fuel light on once and put 18.6 gallons in, I consistently put 16-17 gallons in my tank, I would assume either mine is dented in a helpful way or other peoples are dented in a bad way. I never bothered to check.
 
Ive buried my dial under the "E" line and filled up 18+ gallons before. Not sure where the reserve is, but I must be using it.
 
I usually don't go more than a couple miles once I'm pegged on E and I've never filled up more than maybe 14.5 gallons, so 3-4 gallons left wouldn't be too much of a reach for me.

is what keeps the pick up tube from sucking air when the trucks at an angle. its trapped behind a baffle in a lower chamber of the tank.
 
There was TSB EL010, that addressed gas gauge issues on the '99-'00 4Runners.

Since those vehicles are now long out of warranty, owners would likely have to pay for the parts themselves.

Well looks like my VIN fits into that. And I doubt it was fixed knowing the PO. Is that DIY-able? Or is that something I need to head to the dealer for?

EDIT: After perusing the fixing procedures, I don't want to tackle that myself. I wonder how much it would cost to have done or if it's worth it. I should just replace it with something electrical. Like an Ultragauge or equivalent.

lol you'd die driving my car. PS pump wines but still works. ABS light is constantly on due to grease plugged up abs rings. check engine light is on due to burnt out o2 sensors. i hacked off my rear sway bar so its a little wobbly
