Just wondering if anyone has filled their tank that was known to be completely empty to top off how much was it?

I believe the tank size is 23.3 gallons, correct me if I'm wrong. And the truck will usually go another 30 miles after the dash says 0 miles left. Which comes out to about two gallons of fuel. So 21.1 sounds right if u were at 0 miles left on dash reading.

How do you know it will go 30 more miles? I have yet to truly test it, but have gone 5 miles after hitting zero. I then filled w/ 23.1 gallons and it was FULL.
Gas quality (summer vs winter blend), engine temp, and gas brand can significantly impact how much energy is able to be extracted from fuel per unit, which could be the source of your variability.

All the same. Same commute, mid summer, same gas station. I think going to zero caused some damage to the fuel pump or something. I always ran it to about 10 miles, until I ran to zero. this started the very next fill up after going to zero. The gas needle even shows there is about 1/8-1/4 tank more gas and the dummy light doesnt come on. It doesnt make sense!
You could attempt a level sensor calibration. Bit of a long shot, but seems easy enough and low risk.

Correction on that! I found the receipt.
With the amber light on and the dash saying about 25 miles left on the tank, she took 19.058 gallons. The comp readout is also saying 17.2 mpg.

How much I can get to in depends on the gas pump. Several times I've teased over a gallon in after the first automatic stop. Today's fill up, the pump would not let in even one drop extra. The pumps where I am do not have the high pollution area boot over the nozzle.

Manual says 23.3 completely dry (so my guess is 20-21gal for a fill up from E). I don't like to test it out- I fill up when there's a quarter tank left. The T4R is a little too thirsty to be risking it haha.

I suppose the 23.3 includes the fill pipe? I guess either way I didn't cut it as close as I thought I did with 21 gallons added.
Another thing I've noticed about my 2008, I can slowly put in another full gallon after the pump auto clicks off.

doubtful. the 23ish manufacturer number would be well below the vent hose, which is somewhere on the top of the tank. below the fill neck.

I sometimes do the same, but its apparently bad for the system. it will get raw fuel into the emissions areas, versus fuel vapor, and can damage them.
I was unaware of this. I have been doing it since the time I discovered this soon after buying, now have over 120K miles. No emission system problems so far. Guess I am lucky.

Ya I would avoid this. Not only do you risk damaging the evap cannister (which is about $700 bucks), if you fill up to the tippity top on a warm day, that fuel will expand as it heats up, and It will force an exit. The click stop on the fuel pump is there for this :thumb:
Overfilling tank
Speaking of filling the tank / overfill, can anyone tell me what the plastic box is underneath the 4runner directly below where you fill the tank with gas? Seems like there is a rubber tube coming down from where you fill the tank, this small plastic box, and a large wire loom coming out of it. What is the function of this box? I was mounting an arb compressor here so had to move it a little bit, but wasnt sure if it had to be level, or if it mattered if it was rotated or mounted in a different position. I guess I was confused seeing a rubber tube going into this box then just ending - what purpose it could serve? A sensor of some sort? Thanks!

I believe that is the charcoal canister (EVAP vent) everyone has been talking about. Someone with more knowledge please correct me if I'm wrong. But, overfilling fuel into the neck causes damage to the charcoal (saturation) and results in CELs. You will get fuel odors and the seeping carcinogens from it as well.
